Melbourne Renegades have confirmed the signing of New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell for the 2026-27 Big Bash League. The 35-year-old will be available for the full season, which is scheduled to begin on December 12, 2026.

Bracewell becomes the second overseas player to join the Renegades for the season, following England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow. To make himself available for the entire tournament, Bracewell opted out of his central national contract with New Zealand Cricket and signed a casual playing contract with the club.

“I’m looking forward to joining the Renegades, the BBL is a competition I’ve watched plenty of over the years and one I’ve always wanted to experience. Playing in Melbourne, in front of big crowds at the MCG, is going to be special,” Bracewell said in a club statement.

What does Bracewell bring to the Renegades?

Bracewell made his New Zealand international debut in 2022 and has since built a reputation as a genuine match-winner across formats. He has captained New Zealand in both ODI and T20I cricket, bringing leadership experience alongside his all-round skills.

His T20 record across more than 200 matches includes over 3,600 runs at a strike rate above 135 and more than 100 wickets. A standout moment in his domestic career came during the 2022 Super Smash, when he posted an unbeaten 141 off 65 deliveries for Wellington, a score that stands as the highest individual innings in New Zealand domestic T20 cricket. He carried that aggressive batting form into the 2026 Pakistan Super League, where he recorded a strike rate in excess of 170.

“I enjoy being able to contribute in different ways – whether that’s with the bat, with the ball or in the field – and I’m looking forward to doing whatever the team needs to help us win games,” Bracewell said.

How does Bracewell fit into the Renegades’ BBL|16 plans?

The Renegades head into the 2026-27 season under head coach Luke Ronchi with a squad that blends contracted and uncontracted players. Bracewell slots into a contracted group that already features Bairstow, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Will Sutherland, giving Ronchi a versatile overseas combination at the top of the order and in the bowling attack.

“Michael gives us a lot of options and that’s incredibly valuable in T20 cricket. He’s a genuine all-rounder. He can play a number of different roles with the bat, he’s a very smart off-spinner and he brings a huge amount of experience from playing international and franchise cricket around the world. He’s also been trusted to captain New Zealand, which tells you plenty about the way he sees the game and the type of character he is around a group,” Ronchi said in the statement.
