Liam Dawson retires from first-class cricket with Hampshire

Liam Dawson has announced his immediate retirement from first-class cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished red-ball career with Hampshire.

The 36-year-old all-rounder will continue to represent Hampshire in white-ball formats, including the T20 Blast and the One-Day Cup, but said he believes this is the right time to step away from first-class cricket in order to prolong his limited-overs career.

Hampshire have endured a difficult start to the County Championship season, winning one and losing four of their opening five Division One matches. Dawson featured in four of those games, claiming seven wickets with his left-arm spin, before missing the home fixture against Glamorgan due to injury.

“This is a decision that I haven’t taken lightly but I feel for the benefit of prolonging my career in white-ball cricket, the time is right. I’m extremely proud to have played over 200 games for Hampshire and have had some amazing memories with so many players over the years,” said Dawson as quoted by BBC.

“I’m fully committed to playing white-ball cricket for Hampshire and continuing the success we’ve had. To the fans and members who have turned out over the years, I can’t thank you enough for your support. Hampshire will always be my home,” he added.

Liam Dawson ends his first-class career as one of Hampshire’s most accomplished modern-day all-rounders, having scored more than 10,000 runs and claimed over 350 wickets in more than 200 appearances for the county.

The left-arm spinning all-rounder also represented England in four Test matches against India and South Africa. Among Hampshire men’s players in the 21st century, only Robin Smith, Jimmy Adams and James Vince have scored more runs than Dawson.

Across his red-ball career, Dawson registered 54 half-centuries and 17 hundreds, with a career-best 171 against Kent at Canterbury in 2022 standing out among his finest innings.

Despite retiring from first-class cricket, Dawson remains committed to Hampshire in white-ball formats after signing a new three-year contract in 2025. He is set to return to the Utilita Bowl for Hampshire’s opening T20 match of the season on May 22.
