In cricket, scoring a century, especially in the Test format is one of the most prestigious and challenging milestones for any batter. It requires patience and concentration. While many have gone on to score hundreds in both innings of a Test, some have fallen heartbreakingly short of the mark, dismissed on 99, which is considered among the unluckiest score to be getting out for a batter.
Losing one’s wicket just one run away from a Test century can be devastating, both emotionally and mentally, for the player, and remains etched in the memory of fans as well. Today, CricTracker has a look at three of the most recent batters who suffered this dismissal on 99 in international cricket:
Last 3 players to be dismissed for 99 in Test cricket
1. Harry Brook vs India, Leeds, 2025

England’s middle-order batter Harry Brook missed out on a well-deserved century in the first Test against India at Headingley, Leeds. Brook was dismissed for 99 off 112 balls by Prasidh Krishna. His innings was laden with 11 boundaries and 2 sixes, and was instrumental in reducing the deficit against a strong Indian bowling attack.
However, in his attempt to bring up the hundred with a six, Brook mistimed a hook shot off a short delivery and found Shardul Thakur at deep backward square leg, who completed the catch with ease.
2. Rishabh Pant vs New Zealand, Bengaluru, 2024

Rishabh Pant fell agonizingly short of a century in the opening Test against New Zealand at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. He is known for his aggressive stroke play, and was rebuilding India’s innings alongside Sarfaraz Khan after a poor scoring in his previous innings in the same match.
As he was so close to a match-defining ton, he was undone by a delivery with extra bounce from pacer Will O’Rourke. He attempted a cut shot, but chopped the ball onto his stumps and was bowled for 99. The dismissal was a bitter moment in what had been a fighting innings. This was also the seventh time Pant was dismissed in his nineties, which is the most for a wicketkeeper-batter across formats.
3. Travis Head vs West Indies, Perth, 2022

Australia’s left-hander Travis Head suffered a similar fate in the first Test against the West Indies at Perth during the Caribbean team’s visit in November 2022. Head was batting aggressively and reached 99 off just 95 deliveries with 11 fours and looked set for a rapid century. However, in a lapse of concentration, he chopped a delivery from part-time off-spinner Kraigg Brathwaite onto his stumps through a bottom edge. While Australia were already dominating the scoreboard, the dismissal left Head frustrated as he walked back just one run short of a milestone.
