Following the conclusion of the first Test against Pakistan in Perth, changes have been made to the Australian Test squad, with the group trimmed to 13 players for the upcoming Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Lance Morris, initially part of the squad, will return to action in the Big Bash League (BBL) after the Perth Test, set to play for the Perth Scorchers against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 20 at Optus Stadium.

The return of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood, who are in fine form post their ODI World Cup stint, alongside the inclusion of Scott Boland, sees Morris being released to bolster his participation in the BBL. Notably, Cameron Green, without a BBL contract, will continue as the squad’s 12th man. Selector George Bailey affirmed that Morris remains a part of the national scheme and would be considered if the need arises.

“Lance has been released for the Melbourne match but will stay prepared for Test cricket as he remains firmly in our plans for the summer, should an opportunity arise,” national selector George Bailey said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Tussle between CA, BBL franchises over players availability

However, tensions between Cricket Australia and BBL franchises regarding player availability have surfaced. Brisbane Heat had expressed frustration after losing four players to the Prime Minister’s XI team for the initial BBL matches. Michael Neser was released from the PM’s XI to join the Heat for their BBL opener against the Stars, highlighting the ongoing discussions around player commitments.

In the lead-up to the second Test, Victoria announced a squad featuring Test players Marcus Harris, Peter Handscomb, and Will Pucovski for a two-day tour match against Pakistan at the Junction Oval in Melbourne. The Victoria XI, comprising players without BBL contracts, will utilize the trio’s presence in preparation for the upcoming Test encounter.

Australia squad for Melbourne Test: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green, Scott Boland.
