England left-handed top-order batter, Ben Duckett, commended the hard-fought display from his side as well as India in the first Test of the ongoing five-match series. He also underlined the importance of getting through Jasprit Bumrah’s initial new-ball spell during their pursuit of 371 runs in the fourth innings.

It was Duckett’s 149-run knock in the fourth innings which set up the win. England eventually got over the line by five wickets in the final session of the final day.

“Just an incredible game to be a part of, I thought India were superb and yeah to go into Day 5 and have a finish like we did here, it’s just incredible. I mean first of all, just to get through that period, it was really important, like we normally do, we’d probably get the total. So, we didn’t overthink anything, certainly getting through Jasprit’s (Bumrah) first spell and with that new ball and then from there on just playing our natural games,” stated Duckett while receiving his Player of the Match award.

Massive credit to our bowling side: Duckett

Duckett heaped praise on England’s bowling unit for cleaning up the tail with minimal damage to the scoreboard in both innings.

“Yeah, at times we were completely behind the eight-ball, India played superbly well on Day 1 and there were certain moments in the game and I feel like massive credit to our bowling side who really got the tail out quickly in both innings. If we don’t do that, you could add 50-60 runs to that chase and it could be a completely different game. So, both sides were superb and it was just a great last day,” he added.

India did get the lead in the first innings. However, it was an underwhelming performance by them with respect to their bottom six batters. Across both innings, they managed to score only 65 runs in total. This, combined with several lapses in the field, contributed to their downfall in the end.
