‘It’s the right time for me now’ – Dean Elgar as he announces professional retirement

Dean Elgar has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 39. The former South Africa Test captain made the announcement as he prepares for the final phase of his Essex County Cricket season. Elgar joined Essex on a three-year deal after two previous spells at Surrey and has featured in all nine County Championship matches during the 2026 season.

Elgar cited personal and family reasons for stepping away from the game right after the County Championship season concludes. His final five County Championship matches begin with a home fixture against Surrey at Chelmsford starting Thursday, August 27. Essex currently sits seventh in Division One.

“I feel it’s the right time for me now. I’m not getting any younger, 39 years old, and I’ve got a lot of things going on back home with regards to a young but growing-up-very-quickly family,” Elgar was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

Elgar cites family reasons for stepping away

During the 2026 County Championship season, Elgar demonstrated his continued quality as an opening batter. He scored 436 runs across nine matches, including two significant innings against Surrey at The Oval earlier in the season where he made 92 and an unbeaten 107. His performances underlined his value to the Essex squad even in the latter stages of his career.

“It’s the right time for me now to be present at home and be there for my partner and my kids,” the left-handed batter said.

Chris Silverwood, Essex director of cricket praised Elgar’s commitment to the game, his longevity, and also mentioned how he has helped in developing the younger players in the club.

“With a career spanning more than two decades, his reputation as a senior, experienced opening batter has made him an extremely important figure during his time at Essex, particularly in helping develop the club’s younger players.” Silverwood said.

“For Essex, his time was more than simply scoring runs. We had a player with international experience at Test level, proven credentials and an old-school appetite for occupying the crease, coupled with a hunger for victory. It’s been an absolute pleasure to have had him in my team,” he added.

Elgar’s international career spanned 12 years representing South Africa in Test cricket. He made his Test debut in November 2012 against Australia at The WACA, scoring two ducks in that match. His maiden Test century came in January 2013 against New Zealand, an unbeaten 103. Over his Test career, Elgar accumulated 5,347 runs across 86 matches, including 14 centuries and 23 half-centuries.

The opening batter became known for his ability to carry the bat, achieving this feat three times during his international career. In 2018 in Cape Town, he scored an unbeaten 141 against Australia. He also became the only batter to carry the bat twice in a single calendar year, accomplishing this against India and Australia.
