‘It’s pretty hard to fill in that gap’ – Rachin Ravindra urges New Zealand batters to collectively fill Kane Williamson’s void

Rachin Ravindra has urged all New Zealand batters to collectively give their best to replace the void left behind by Kane Williamson ahead of their second Test match against England at the Oval, commencing on Wednesday, June 17. This comes after the great Black Caps batter decided to retire from international cricket days after the conclusion of the first Test, where his side lost by 115 runs.

Ravindra understands that there will always be a huge hole to fill whenever a team loses one of its greatest players. However, if all the other batters on the side chip in and contribute to their maximum potential, they can eventually fill the void, since it is almost impossible for one player to do so.

New Zealand have already included Will Young in their squad following Williamson’s retirement and is expected to feature in the second Test match.

“I don’t necessarily see it as pressure. Whenever a great moves on there is always a hole in the team. But the strength and quality in our team is what we pride ourselves on. We have Henry Nicholls and obviously Will Young is here as batting back-up. We all share responsibility within our batting unit. It’s not on one guy, it’s pretty hard to fill in that gap and unfortunately I don’t think many people can. So it will be a collective effort,” Rachin Ravindra said in the pre-match press conference.

Ravindra also spoke highly of Williamson, not only as a player everyone looks up to, but also as a person off the field. The left-handed batter takes pride in sharing the crease with him during the initial years of his international career.

It is worth mentioning that both Ravindra and Williamson have had countless noteworthy partnerships with the bat. Most notably, the pair shared a 232-run stand against South Africa in 2024, with the pair scoring 240 and 118, respectively.

“It’s always tough when probably our greatest player calls time. We were all so supportive of his decision. Kane is such an amazing player but more than that he’s such an amazing bloke and has contributed so much to New Zealand. Personally I have looked up to him for a long time now. He’s one of my biggest idols. I was very lucky to share the crease with him and enjoy some cool partnerships. Sharing the crease, he is in a zen. He’s such a great mentor. Kane has done things in his own way and decided the time is right. He has been so giving to the group,” he added.

New Zealand do have a chance to level the series 1-1 when they take on an England side in turmoil. The Three Lions will be without captain Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson, who have been suspended following a nightclub controversy. Joe Root will lead the side out at the Oval on Wednesday, comprising two debutants and a total of four changes from the side which won at Lord’s.
