Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has voiced mild concern on India’s likelihood of qualifying for the final of the 2025-27 cycle of the World Test Championship. India have won four, lost four and drawn one match in the 2025-27 cycle of the WTC until now.

Chopra reckoned that the 0-2 loss at home against South Africa might come back and haunt India in their pursuit of their third WTC final. He also pointed out that India’s schedule will not make it as easy for them to compensate for the lost points.

“I’ll be very honest. It’s become difficult because you’ve lost both matches at home. It means you’ve lost 100% points. You came from England with less than 50% points. You got 100% points against West Indies. You’ll have to do well against Sri Lanka, then New Zealand, and then Australia at home. You don’t win five matches in a five-match series. It doesn’t happen generally. Winning 100% points there is very difficult,” shared Chopra in a video on his YouTube channel.

The renowned commentator highlighted that the journey ahead will a tough one for the Indian Test unit. He felt it will be hard for India to win all five Tests against Australia even on Indian soil, while the two-Test series which will be held in New Zealand will be even trickier.

“India’s WTC final [chances] is tough. It’s not going to be an easy one. I can 100% share that with you, and it’s not good news. India should’ve won at least one match and garnered 50% points against South Africa. Taking a zero from there and then hoping that we will get 100% against Australia at home and that we will also win both in New Zealand, it won’t happen that easily. We are unable to beat New Zealand in New Zealand. It’s going to be a tough one,” he added.

India have played nine matches in the 2025-27 WTC so far and have points percentage of 48.15%. They are slated to play two Tests against Sri Lanka away (August 2026), two Tests against New Zealand away (October-November 2026) and five Tests against Australia at home (January-February 2027).
