'It's going to be difficult' - Aakash Chopra shares his verdict on Shubman Gill's T20I comeback

Former batter Aakash Chopra firmly stated that India should not try to shoehorn Shubman Gill into their T20 setup. This comes after the Men in Blue secured their second consecutive T20 World Cup on Sunday, March 8, by beating New Zealand in the final by 96 runs.

Chopra said that he understands why the management would want to have Gill in the T20I setup, as having the same captain across formats is always beneficial. However, with the current team structure, it is not only difficult for the ODI and Test captain to lead the team in the shortest format but to even find a place in the playing XI.

Gill’s playing style is not suited for a side constantly posting scores of well above 200 in T20 games in Chopra’s opinion and he does not want the Gujarat Titans star to change his style of play to accommodate for one format when he is already a world beater in two other forms of the game.

“It’s going to be difficult, although the Indian team thought that it would become easier if there were one captain for all three formats. However, it won’t happen at all. I feel we won’t be able to do that because he is the Test and ODI captain, but he can’t get the T20I captaincy. At this moment, even his name coming is difficult because of the way the Indian team has been playing, especially the last four games,” Aakash Chopra was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.

“When are you talking about 250, and that too in a World Cup, then you don’t think you need an anchor. Shubman Gill can adapt and change, but we shouldn’t lose Shubman Gill, the Test batter, in trying to find that, and lose the Shubman Gill who can become an absolute giant in ODIs. I think it’s going to be difficult for Shubman Gill,” he added.

Gill has been underwhelming in T20Is in recent times. The right-handed batter scored just 291 runs at an average of 24.25 from 15 games. His most recent T20I outing came against South Africa towards the end of 2025 where he scored just 32 runs from three games.
