‘It’s a tricky couple of months for the selectors’ – Abhinav Mukund on Bumrah’s ODI squad prospects

The BCCI held a meeting involving head coach Gautam Gambhir and captains Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer to discuss India’s cricket calendar and recent injuries affecting the squad. The discussion centred on selection strategy and scheduling challenges as India prepares for multiple series in the coming months, including the New Zealand Test tour.

Former CSK cricketer Abhinav Mukund reviewed the outcomes of the BCCI meeting and highlighted the uncertainty surrounding key player availability, especially the talismanic but injury-prone Jasprit Bumrah. Mukund addressed the complex decisions facing the selection committee as they balance immediate squad needs with long-term preparation.

“Bumrah might be asked to play a couple of these four-day games or even the A game against New Zealand. However, we have to wait and see if he makes the ODI squad or if he goes straight to prepare for the New Zealand Tests. So it’s a tricky couple of months for the selectors,” Mukund said on his Instagram handle.

Bumrah’s selection status remains uncertain for ODI squad

Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of India’s Sri Lanka tour on August 3 due to a knee injury and was replaced by Auqib Nabi for the two-Test series. India A is scheduled to play three red-ball games from October 24 to November 10 ahead of the New Zealand Test series, creating a window for Bumrah to regain match fitness if required.

Mukund also highlighted India’s new approach to scheduling and the concerns raised by senior players during the BCCI meeting. Both Gill and Iyer have advocated for adequate gaps between series to manage player workload and recovery.

“India have announced that they’ll play a lot more shadow tours before Test matches, which is a great idea to get acclimatised and get adequate rest. Another thing that came out of the BCCI meeting seems to be that both Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer have insisted that there should be an adequate gap between series. Maybe that’ll happen after the next IPL because for now, India’s calendar looks very tight, with a lot of games coming up,” Mukund said.

India’s cricket calendar remains congested with multiple series scheduled in quick succession. The BCCI’s decision to introduce more shadow tours before Test matches reflects an effort to balance preparation with player recovery, though the immediate schedule continues to present challenges for squad management and player availability.

Rohit Sharma’s World Cup future clarified

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clearly mentioned that there’s no truth to the retirement rumours regarding Rohit Sharma. In July, during the England tour, there were reports suggesting that Rohit would retire from international cricket. However, he silenced his doubters with a brilliant century in the final ODI at Lord’s. Mukund believes that the former India captain can now retire on his own terms.

“Devajit Saikia’s statement puts an end to almost all the rumors that have been spreading about whether Rohit Sharma will play the 2027 World Cup. Now, the ball is firmly in his court,” Mukund said.
