In the 22nd clash of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Afghanistan are set to face off against Pakistan at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. A stern warning has been sounded by Afghanistan’s head coach, Jonathan Trott, emphasising that victory cannot rest solely on the shoulders of their spinners. Despite their pivotal role in the triumphant outing against England last week, the batters have notably failed to deliver on the big stage.

While the pacers have shown slight improvement, the trio comprising Naveen ul Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqui, and Azmatullah Omarzai has managed to secure just nine wickets in four matches, all at a costly run rate. In anticipation of the upcoming crucial encounter, Coach Trott emphasized the pressing need for the batters to shoulder their responsibilities rather than leaning too heavily on the spinners’ prowess.

“The thing is – with spinners, there are only two or three of them playing a game. And it’s the other eight as well that have to play the game so that’s important. So, it’s everybody’s job it’s not just the spinners’ job to win games. There’s batsmen who’ve got to put runs on the board or batsmen who’ve got to chase down a total.” Trott said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Dropped catches hurt Afghanistan more than anything in Kiwi encounter

Afghanistan’s fielding performance has raised concerns, particularly evident in their recent clash with New Zealand, where they grassed seven crucial catches, undeniably proving costly in their pursuit of victory. Their catch success rate in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 has left much to be desired. Coach Trott, however, remains optimistic that his team will exhibit an improved fielding display when they face Pakistan.

“Dropped catches don’t help, especially when you win the toss and bowl first, you want to put the opposition under pressure. We had an opportunity to do that with New Zealand, and we had them. So, obviously the things you’d like to do differently, there are things you could do better, and we’ll be looking tomorrow to do that,” he added.
