‘It affected my family a little bit more than it affected me’ – Glenn Maxwell finally addresses ‘drunken incident’

'It affected my family a little bit more than it affected me' - Glenn Maxwell finally addresses 'drunken incident'

Australia star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell stated that the ‘drunken incident’ might have affected his family more than himself. The incident happened in late January as he attended a late-night party in Adelaide and was eventually hospitalized after falling unconscious before the T20I series against the West Indies.

The 35-year-old mentioned that he feels the incident was “less than ideal, and the timing.” Maxwell’s comments came after making the fastest T20 century on Australian soil, where the hosts won by 34 runs. He scored an unbeaten 120 off just 55 deliveries in the second T20I against the Carrebieamn nation which also helped them to seal the series.

“I think probably it affected my family a little bit more than it affected me,” Maxwell was quoted as saying by The West Australian.

“I knew I had that week off. And obviously, that incident was less than ideal, and the timing. But I had that week off, I knew I had that week off away from the game. And I came back and got back into my running, my gym program and it felt really good and refreshed once I got back. And it’s all been focused on getting myself ready for this (T20) series and what’s to come. We know we have got four international games until the (T20) World Cup and how it comes around pretty quick. And I just try to make sure I’m in as good a space that I can be for that tournament,” the 35-year-old added.

Andrew McDonald, Australia’s head coach, has earlier stated that Maxwell had been drinking and the latter had to “hold up his end of the bargain”. However, the all-rounder expressed his gratitude for the support of McDonald, chairman of selectors George Bailey, and the support staff. “The coach, Bails, everyone really, they have been outstanding,” Maxwell said further.
