Ireland leg-spinner Ben White has announced his retirement from representative cricket at the age of 28 on Wednesday, October 28. White made his international debut in a T20I against South Africa in Belfast in 2021, while his last appearance for Ireland came against Bangladesh in December 2025.
White represented Ireland in three Test matches, all of which came in 2023. Overall, he earned 43 international caps across formats, including 38 T20I appearances. He finished his international career with 41 wickets and was part of Ireland’s squads for three ICC Men’s T20 World Cups in 2021, 2024 and 2026.
Reflecting on his career, White thanked Cricket Ireland for the opportunity to represent his country at the highest level. He also highlighted his participation in three T20 World Cups and his experience of playing Test cricket as achievements he would always cherish.
“I’d like to thank Cricket Ireland for giving me the opportunity to fulfil a childhood dream of representing my country and playing cricket at the highest level,” White said in a statement.
“Representing Ireland at three ICC T20 World Cups and playing Test cricket definitely wasn’t on the bingo card, but it’s something I’ll always be incredibly proud of, and I’ll be forever grateful for the experiences and memories I’ve made along the way,” he added.
Gary Wilson reflects on Ben White’s international career
Ireland head coach Gary Wilson shared his thoughts on White’s retirement, acknowledging the leg-spinner’s dedication and contribution to the national side. Wilson said he had mixed feelings about the announcement, wishing White well while recognising the effort he had invested in pursuing his dream of representing Ireland.
“On these occasions, it’s always with mixed feelings that I respond to a retirement such as Ben’s. On one hand, I wish him well and congratulate him on a career into which he dedicated so much time and effort. But on the other hand, I know first-hand how much he put into pursuing his dream of playing for Ireland and am pleased that he achieved over 40 caps for his country and he will be missed around the group,” Wilson was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Wilson also highlighted White’s qualities as a T20 bowler, noting his ability to generate bounce and bowl with considerable pace. He added that being selected for three T20 World Cup squads reflected the regard in which White was held within the Irish setup.
“While he played all formats, Ben will be fondly remembered for his T20 cricket the most – his ability to extract bounce and bowl at great pace made him a handful. Making three T20 World Cup squads is testament to the esteem he was held in, and he should be proud of what he achieved over his career,” Wilson added.
