The IPL 2027 mini-auction will be staged on December 16, 2026 at ITC Grand Goa, with franchises gathering for a briefing the previous day on December 15. The event is a day-long affair and marks the return of the IPL auction to Indian soil after three successive overseas editions held in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Notably, December 16 falls on the same day as the second One-Day International between India and Sri Lanka in Bengaluru, meaning the auction will run concurrently with an international fixture.

Franchises have been informed that the deadline to submit retentions is November 15, 2026, arriving just under a month before auction day. Once that cutoff passes, the IPL will furnish each franchise with a registered player pool to shortlist from. The finalised shortlist, together with order sets, will be sent out to franchises during the week leading up to December 16. The IPL 2027 salary cap has been set at Rs 157 crore, a rise from the Rs 151 crore ceiling that applied during the 2026 season.

What is the current state of the IPL trade window?

According to IPL regulations, the trade window opens one month after the conclusion of the previous season, remains active until one week before the auction date, and then reopens and runs until one month before the start of the following season. Since the 2026 season concluded, only two trades have been completed within that window.

In June, Lucknow Super Giants moved their captain Rishabh Pant to Delhi Capitals in exchange for wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. More recently, Delhi Capitals transferred fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad, receiving uncapped leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari in return. With the trade window set to close one week before December 16, franchises have a limited period remaining to complete any further player exchanges before auction preparations are locked in.

What comes after the IPL 2027 mini-auction?

The December 16 event will be the final mini-auction within IPL’s current 2023–2027 cycle. A mega auction is scheduled ahead of the 2028 season, and that event will also serve as the launchpad for IPL’s next media rights cycle. The BCCI is yet to release a tender for those rights. For context, the 2022 media rights sale saw IPL broadcast rights fetch INR 48,390.5 crore, approximately US$ 6.2 billion, placing the league firmly in the ivy league of global sport.

As for the 2027 season itself, dates have not been finalised. In 2024, while announcing windows for the following three seasons, the BCCI had provisionally chalked out a window between March 14 and May 30 for the 2027 edition. However, following the BCCI’s AGM in September 2026, board secretary Devajit Saikia indicated the tournament could begin around March-end, though no official confirmation has been issued by the board.
