Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori has provided an update on England fast-bowler Brydon Carse and his absence from the team in their first game of IPL 2026 against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Carse was slated as a prospective starter due to his hit-the-deck bowling, which could have been a point of difference in the Sunrisers attack, especially with the pitch at the Chinnaswamy Stadium favouring that style of bowling.
Vettori explained that Carse was hit on his right hand in the nets while training ahead of the game. While there was no significant Iinjry, the swelling meant Carse was unable to grip the ball. The situation is improving, and the former New Zealand skipper hopes Carse is ready for selection in their next game at the Eden Gardens.
“He got hit on the hand in the nets when he was batting, on his bowling hand. It was cleared of any break, but there was quite a lot of swelling and he tried to push for the game, but it was difficult for him to hold the ball. He has been improving, so we are hoping he is available for selection for Kolkata,” Vettori said in the post-match press conference.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad were comprehensively beaten in their opening game of IPL 2026. Being put in to bat, they managed a considerable score of 201/9 on the back of Ishan Kishan’s vital 80 and an 18-ball 43 from Aniket Verma. Debutant Jacob Duffy picked up 3/22 in his first outing.
However, RCB made light work of the chase, reaching the total in just 15.4 overs with an imperious 61 from Devdutt Padikkal and Virat Kohli carrying his bat till the end unbeaten on 69. While David Payne, also on debut, picked up two wickets, the overall bowling performance was one to forget for the team in orange.
Sunrisers Hyderabad play their next match against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on April 2.
