The Punjab Kings beat the Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets in Match 17 of the 2026 Indian Premier League at the new PCA Stadium in Mullanpur.
Being put into bat first, the Sunrisers started in blistering fashion, with the star opening duo of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma taking the Punjab bowlers to the cleaners. The Sunrisers reached 105/0 at the end of the powerplay, the highest of the season.
The two lefties put on a partnership of 120 runs in just 50 balls, setting the platform for the Sunrisers. However, Shahsank Suingh dismissed both of them with his medium pace, which opened the door for the Punjab Kings. Ishan Kishan made 27 and Heinrich Klaasen scored 39 as the Sunrisers were able to put on 219 for 6 after looking set to cross 250 at one stage.
In response, the Punjab Kings started their innings in a similar vein, getting 93 runs off the powerplay. Priyansh Arya reached 50 off just 16 balls, the second-fastest of the season, while Prabhsimran also scored a half-century.
Sunrisers clawed their way back, dismissing both the openers and Cooper Connolly, but captain Shreyas Iyer scored an unbeaten 69 off 33 balls to lead the Kings home with seven balls to spare. This became the 10th occasion in IPL history where the Kings chased down a 200-plus target, the most by any team in the tournament.
Talking Points
1) The blistering return of ‘Travishek’
After a few early failures, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, the most feared opening pair in recent IPL history, played an innings of their reputation. The pair stitched a brilliant partnership of 120 runs off just 50 balls, scoring 105 of those in the powerplay. Abhishek was the wrecker-in-chief, scoring 74 off just 28 balls, as Head was mostly the second fiddle. Their stand helped SRH set the platform for their innings
2) Sunrisers’ middle-order woes continue
After the openers got to 120 off just 50 balls, Surisers finished their innings with 219 at the end of their 20 overs, managing only 99 off the next 70 balls, as the middle order was unable to get going. Ishan Kishan scored 27 and Heinrich Klaasen scored a slow 39 off 33 balls. The batters were not able to make a move, a problem which has persisted for the Sunrisers since the start of the season.
3) Priyansh, Prabhsimran join the party
This was the game of the openers, with the Punjab pair following suit, smashing 93 runs in the powerplay. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh took the attack to the Sunrisers bowlers to start the 220 chase in dominant fashion. Both the batters got fifties, with Priyansh’s coming in just 16 balls, the second-fastest of the 2026 edition. They set the platform for the chase with the 99-run partnership off just 38 balls, going toe-to-toe with the high-profile Sunrisers openers.
4) Punjab complete tenth 200+ chase
With his victory, the Kings became the first team to complete ten successful 200[plus run chases in the IPL. The next best are the Mumbai Indians with six 200-plus chases.
Who said what
Ishan Kishan, Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain
“We could have ended with a total of 250, the way we started. At the same time, they batted well in the beginning. At the same time, we were not so good with the execution – in T20 cricket, the most important thing is the execution of your good balls. 190 is a par score here, we could have had 240 here. But 220 was a great total. We had six or seven bowlers. It showed in their batting that it was easier scoring runs for them. I think in today’s age, you don’t have to plan much – you just do ahead of the game. You know which batter hits where. When you don’t execute balls, you have nothing – you just end up giving 10-20 runs. [On their 200-plus totals not being safe] No, to be honest, we don’t think so much. It’s simple cricket. Your bowlers have a total, you try to defend. If you don’t bowl in the right areas, you don’t stop runs in the middle.”
Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings captain, Player of the Match
“Firstly, we’ve got a phenomenal start. When you’re chasing 220, you need that start. Pleasing to the eye, proper cricketing shots. Steadied the rhythm at the start. Not easy, but maintaining that momentum – I needed to give myself time. Once I gauged the pace of the pitch. [After SRH’s start] All of us came together, and Shashank approached me, give me an over. Ricky came and asked me, what’s your thought? I said I’ll go with Shashank – I need someone to take the pace off. He lived up to his expectations, he lived up to what he said, kudos to him. At the end of the day, we all know we’ve got the skills. We need a strong mindset when we go for such chases. Openers have been flowing throughout, they don’t need to curb their instincts. Others, who set their platforms from ball one, it’s easy for us to rotate strike and go according to run rate. Overall, we’ve been magnificent with our work ethic. All players worked their bodies off. Work: they’re delivering on the field. I keep reiterating every now and then, you have to be in the present. Ricky [Ponting] also takes a lot of importance in this aspect. Even last year, we came so close to winning the trophy. This year, we want to lift it. It will take a lot of effort to envision that.”
