Chennai Super Kings (CSK) comprehensively defeated the Mumbai Indians (MI) by 103 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, April 23.

Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to field first on Thursday. However, the move didn’t pay dividends, at least in the first few overs, as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson hit the ground running. However, the former was dismissed after a good start. Sarfaraz Khan looked good during his brief stay at the crease before Mitchell Santner cleaned him up.

Shivam Dube was promoted to No. 3, but he couldn’t make any impact. Dewald Brevis and Jamie Overton hit some lusty blows, while Kartik Sharma only managed 18 off 19 balls. However, the innings was held together by Sanju Samson, who finished on 101* off 54 balls. CSK posted 207/6 in their 20 overs.

In the second innings, Ruturaj handed the new ball to Akeal Hosein and the West Indies spinner delivered immediately. He dismissed Danish Malewar in his first over. Mukesh Chowdhary backed it up with the wicket of Quinton de Kock in the second over. Akeal returned and broke through four balls later to send Naman Dhir back to the hut.

Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma tried to resurrect the innings with a 73-run partnership off 56 balls, but the required run rate kept on climbing. Akeal dismissed both of them as the Mumbai batted collapsed inexplicably. From 84/3, Mumbai were bowled out for 104 in 19 overs. Akeal starred with a four-for, while Noor picked up two wickets.

Key moments from the match:

1. Sanju Samson lights up Wankhede Stadium

Sanju Samson lights up Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai with an exemplary display of batting. The 31-year-old hasn’t got too many starts this season, but when he has, he has made it count. Samson smashed 101 off 54 balls, remaining unbeaten in testing conditions. He bludgeoned 10 fours and six sixes to thwart the Mumbai bowlers and take Chennai to a 200-plus total.

2. Akeal Hosein dominates power play

Akeal Hosein has dominated power play overs while playing for the West Indies. He has also been a menace with the new ball in other franchise leagues around the world. On Thursday, he chose the IPL as his stage to enthral cricket enthusiasts. The left-arm spinner dismissed Danish Malewar and Naman Dhir in the first and second overs, respectively. Later, he came back to send the well-set duo of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma packing.

3. AM Ghazanfar’s performance only silver lining for MI

AM Ghazanfar produced another brilliant display with the ball. He held his own against the dangerous Sanju Samson and took the big wickets of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube. The wicket of Ruturaj was crucial as the Chennai skipper had gotten off to a flying start. In the end, Ghazanfar finished with excellent figures of 2/25 in his four-over spell.
