The Chennai Super Kings beat the Lucknow Super Giants by five wickets in Match 53 of the 2026 Indian Premier League at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Being put into bat on a hot afternoon at the Chepauk, the Super Giants started in brilliant fashion with the returning Josh Inglis taking the Super Kings bowlers to all parts. He unleashed his entire arsenal of destructive and innovative strokeplay, racing to his half-century off just 17 balls. Inglis finished the powerplay on 77 off 25 balls as the Super Giants stood at 91/1.
Nicholas Pooran fell to Noor Ahmed two balls after the powerplay, which slowed down the Super Giants. The big blow for the LSG’s innings came in the 10th over as Jamie Overton dismissed Inglis and skipper Rishabh Pant in the same over. Inglis fell for a well-made 85 off 33 balls, which again halted LSG’s momentum. Shahbaz Ahmed scored an unbeaten 25-ball 43, which propelled the Super Giants up to 203/8. Overton finished the innings with figures of 3 for 36 in his four overs.
The Super Kings started their chase in modest fashion, as the openers stitched a partnership of 45 runs. Digvesh Rathi picked up the wicket of Sanju Samson, which brought Urvil Patel to the crease. And then began the carnage, as Urvil took the Super Giants bowlers on. He hit seven sixes and a four on his way to a 13-ball fifty, the joint-fastest in the history of the league. He hit one more four and six before falling for 65 off 23 balls with the score reading 126 for 2 in the 10th over.
Urvil’s dismissal slowed down the Super Kings as they took some time to regroup. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad fell for 42 off 28 balls, which saw the Super Kings hit a bump on the road. They were still chipping away at the score, which left them in a position for Shivam Dube and Prashant Veer to lead them home in the final over.
The Super Kings are up to fifth on the table and with three matches remaining, they will be looking to make a push for the playoffs. They have 12 points in 11 games with six wins. The Lucknow Super Giants record their eighth loss of the season in 11 games, and have been eliminated from the competition.
