Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during Match No. 18 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday, April 12.
As per an official media advisory released by the IPL, Gaikwad was handed a fine of INR 12 lakh. This was CSK’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which relates to minimum over-rate violations, the standard penalty was imposed.
Gaikwad became the third captain to be penalised for a slow over-rate in the ongoing edition of the tournament, as the BCCI has maintained strict enforcement of the rules.
Shreyas Iyer was the first skipper to be penalised, having committed the offence twice while leading Punjab Kings. His second breach resulted in a heavier fine of INR 24 lakh. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, captain of Gujarat Titans, was also fined for a similar offence during their clash against Delhi Capitals on April 8.
With multiple instances already recorded in the early stages of IPL 2026, teams will need to be more cautious in maintaining the required over-rate to avoid further penalties.
Meanwhile, it was a much-needed win for the five-time IPL champions in the ongoing IPL after losing the first three games of the season.
Their newest recruit Sanju Samson was the star of the show, scoring a breathtaking knock of unbeaten 115 in just 56 balls. He was well supported by Ayush Mhatre (59 off 36) and Shivam Dube (unbeaten 20 off 10). In the bowling department, Jamie Overton picked up four wickets, giving away just 18 runs in four overs, while Anshul Kamboj, too, was brilliant with the ball, picking up three wickets.
CSK will now face Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday, April 14.
