IPL 2026: 5 surprise performers who stole the show

Every Indian Premier League (IPL) season delivers high-stakes drama, but the true magic of IPL 2026 lay in the rise of its unexpected heroes. While global superstars and expensive auction buys faced immense pressure to perform, a handful of lesser-known players quietly stepped up to steal the spotlight.

These unknown players defied expectations, turned match situations on their head, and quickly transformed from bench-warmers into absolute match-winners for their respective franchises.

Here are the five surprise packages of IPL 2026 who mark on the tournament:

The left-arm batter from Australia, Cooper Connolly impressed everyone in his first-ever IPL stint with Punjab Kings in 2026. Throughout the season, he was backed by the PBKS management at number 3 position, and he did not disappoint. Connolly smashed 491 runs for them at a strike rate of 163.12. He also smashed one hundred and two fifty-plus scores. He is just 22-year-old and has a long future ahead of him.

4. Praful Hinge

The right-arm pacer from Maharashtra had one of the greatest debuts in the history of IPL when he demolished the RR batting line-up single handedly in Hyderabad. Hinge took three wickets in his first ever over, becoming the first-ever pacer to achieve the feat in league’s history. He featured in SRH’s seven matches this IPL, picking up 14 wickets at an economy rate of 11.73. He showed great potential in his first-ever IPL season, and will get better with time and experience.

3. Mukul Choudhary

The Lucknow Super Giants batter Mukul Choudhary pulled off a miracle at the iconic Eden Gardens against Kolkata Knight Riders in a group-stage encounter. The right-hander put on a six hitting masterclass as he smashed 54 runs in just 27 balls to pull off a miraculous victory. After the heroics against KKR, he became a success story overnight. He featured in 10 matches for LSG, scoring 170 runs with a strike rate of 141.67. Though he failed to maintain consistency throughout the season, he showed glimpses of how good he can be with the bat.

2. Sakib Hussain

Hinge’s teammate from SRH, Sakib Hussain too, had a breakthrough season. The right-arm pacer impressed with his sharp bowling and wicket-taking ability. He was part of KKR’s title-winning squad but failed to make his debut for them. He was included in the playing XI by SRH this season, and delivered the results. In 11 matches, he picked up 15 wickets with an impressive strike rate of 16.80.

LSG finished last on the points table in IPL 2026, and it was a poor season for them. But the biggest positive was Prince Yadav. The right-arm pacer was their best bowler this year, bowling the most difficult overs. He managed to play 14 matches, picking up 16 wickets at an economy rate of 8.83. He was rewarded with an India call-up post IPL, as he has been picked up for the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.
