IPL 2024: Top Memes from RR vs DC, Match 9

Match 9 of IPL 2024 was a red-letter day for the Delhi Capital’s skipper Rishabh Pant, who became the first player from the Delhi-based franchise to appear in 100 IPL matches. Coincidentally, the toss went in his favour too, with him asking the home team to bat first. The otherwise expansive duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler didn’t come good for the Rajasthan Royals, with Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Kumar breathing fire with the new ball, hitting the perfect lengths as well as getting the ball to swing in the air. RR could only manage 31/2 in the first six, with Jaiswal and skipper Sanju Samson back to the hut already – the former getting outdone by an absolute peach of an inswinger, while the latter guided a back-of-a-length delivery to wicketkeeper Pant.

Post Buttler getting dismissed, outwalked Ravichandran Ashwin. Yes, you read it right. It felt like 2022 all over again, with the seasoned campaigner walking in at first drop against the same opposition in a match where he top-scored for the Royals with 50 (38). This time around, during his 19-ball stay at the crease, the offie looked a different personality altogether, with him smashing three sixes in his 29-run knock, which entailed two cracking pulls against the South African Anriche Nortje, who was hitting the 140 kph mark on a consistent basis.

Short but quick cameos were played by Dhruv Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer, but the star of the first innings was Riyan Parag without a doubt. The 22-year-old Guwahati-born individual bludgeoned his way to a swashbuckling innings off 84 off 45, which comprised 7 fours and 6 sixes, taking Nortje for a 25-run final over, getting to his highest IPL score in the process, leading RR to a total of 185/5. Each of the five bowlers took a wicket apiece, with Mukesh, Nortje, and Kuldeep Yadav going the distance.

The chase by the visitors got off to quite a prompt and brisk start, with DC scoring 29 without a loss in the first three. The fourth over was the one which halted proceedings, at least temporarily, with Nandre Burger producing a double-wicket over. It wasn’t meant to be quite the day for Pant on his special day, with him playing a similar kind of knock played by his counterpart skipper, almost scoring at run-a-ball, before getting caught behind off the bowling of Yuzvendra Chahal, who returned excellent figures of 2/19 in 3 overs.

Tristan Stubbs played a Tim David-esque innings, the way he played against SRH the day before, scoring 44 off 23, which ultimately went in vain, with the left-handed Abishek Porel, who got into Harshal Patel in DC’s inaugural match, getting dismissed for a subpar 9 (10).

With 17 required off the final over and Avesh Khan with the ball and Stubbs and Axar Patel at the crease, the match promised to be another final-ball thriller. However, it wasn’t meant to be, with Avesh nailing his yorkers in pinpoint fashion, conceding just 4 runs, to help the home team win their second game on the trot, with Parag deservedly getting awarded with the Player of the Match award for his ridiculous hitting in the initial half of the match.
