Tom Kohler -Cadmore’s innovative protective gear caught the attention of cricket enthusiasts during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 clash between Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday, May 15.

In his debut IPL game, the right-handed batter failed to make an impact with the bat, as he made a sluggish 18 off 23 balls after opening the innings for the Royals. However, what fascinated the fans was a protective gear that the English batter was wearing during his batting stint. Many wondered whether it was a fashion accessory. Others wondered if it was a device to track his health.

However, it was actually called the Q-Collar, developed by a company named Q30 Innovations. The Q-Collar is a lightweight device that athletes across the globe wear to minimize the risk of head injuries. The device has been mostly used by American football players in the NFL (National Football League) to protect them from brain injuries. Kohler-Cadmore is the first cricketer to wear the head protective device and hopefully, in the future, more cricketers will follow his path and take their safety more seriously.

RR slump to fourth consecutive defeat

Rajasthan’s recent form continues to be a major concern, as they suffered their fourth defeat in a row on Wednesday. After opting to bat first, the inaugural champions were restricted to 144/9, as the Punjab bowlers put on a disciplined show. Captain Sam Curran, Harshal Patel, and Rahul Chahar were particularly quite impressive, as they bagged two wickets each.

In reply, Punjab were reduced to 48/4 in seven overs, but Curran stood up with the bat and scored a mesmerising 63* off 41 balls to take his team home with five wickets and seven balls to spare. Avesh Khan and Yuzvendra Chahal bagged two wickets apiece, but it wasn’t enough for the Royals. Sanju Samson and Co. will play their final league game against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday, May 19. Meanwhile, Punjab will end their campaign with a clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on the same day.
