Super Overs are the must-have entertainment in the T20 format. Whenever a match is tied in T20Is or T20 leagues like the IPL, a super over is played. Three pre-designated batters play six balls from a pre-determined bowler from the opposition and score as many runs as they can. However, if two batters are dismissed before the six balls are over, then the innings end.

The other team then has to chase down the total with the same rules. If a super over is tied, then another super over is played, and then another until a result is reached.

Therefore, in the IPL, teams prepare beforehand who their super over batters and bowlers will be and always have an option as a backup for all of them. With the IPL 2024 season nearing, we take a look at the super over combinations of all the ten teams for the season.

Team-wise Super Over combinations for the IPL 2024 season:

1. Chennai Super Kings- Shivam Dube, Daryl Mitchell, Ruturaj Gaikwad; Deepak Chahar

The defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will have a lot to choose from when it comes to super over batting and bowling combinations. CSK bought power hitters Daryl Mitchell and Sameer Rizvi in the IPL 2024 auction and already has Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni, and Ruturaj Gaikwad for super-over purposes.

As for the bowling duties in Super Over, CSK’s best bet would be Deepak Chahar, who is known for his variations and perfect yorkers. CSK might also go for Mukesh Choudhary or Mustafizur Rahman or even spinners like Mitchell Santner and Maheesh Theekshana if the need arises. With a brilliant cricketing mind like MS Dhoni leading CSK, there could be more combinations they can go for.

2. Mumbai Indians- Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma; Jasprit Bumrah

Mumbai Indians have perhaps one of the best big-hitting batters, suited perfectly for super-over scenarios. They have brilliant six-hitters in Rohit Sharma, captain Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Tim David, Dewald Brevis, Nehal Wadhera, and the best of all, Suryakumar Yadav. All of these batters can hit the big shots needed to get maximum runs in a super over.

As for the bowlers in Super Over, MI does not have to look anywhere else than Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah had shown his worth in super overs in IPL 2016 when he defended six odd runs against Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith in a match versus Gujarat Lions. If not Bumrah, then MI has Akash Madhwal, Gerald Coetzee, Dilshan Madushanka, and others to choose from.

3. Royal Challengers Bangalore- Glenn Maxwell, Will Jacks, Virat Kohli; Mohammed Siraj

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) also have a plethora of big hitters if needed in super overs. First and foremost, they possess Glenn Maxwell, who can tonk both the spinners and pacers for sixes at will. Other big hitters in RCB are Cameron Green, Willi Jacks, Virat Kohli, Anuj Rawat, and Suyash Prabhudessai.

As for the bowling options for the super over, RCB’s ace is Mohammed Siraj. Siraj has all the experience needed to bowl in high-tension situations. RCB can also explore other options like Alzarri Joseph, Reece Topley, and Lockie Ferguson.

Kolkata Knight Riders were involved in one of the earliest super-overs in the IPL in the 2009 edition. And they have lots of experience in their batting and bowling lineup to cope with a situation of scoring maximum runs in 6 balls and then defending the same. The big hitters in KKR are Jason Roy, Andre Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and best of all, Rinku Singh.

When it comes to defending the said runs or bowling out the opposition batters in Super Over, KKR should depend on Mitchell Starc and his experience. Other options for KKR are Andre Russell, Chetan Sakariya, and Suni Narine, who is the only bowler to bowl a maiden in a super over in T20 cricket.

5. Sunrisers Hyderabad- Heinrich Klaasen, Abdul Samad, Glenn Phillips; Bhuvneshwar Kumar

The Sunrisers Hyderabad squad looks intimidating after some adjustments and brilliant buys in the IPL 2024 auction. If it comes to a situation like Super Over, SRH has hitters in Heinrich Klaasen, Abdul Samad, and Glenn Phillips. They also added Travis Head to their armoury and he can do some damage in six balls as well.

When it comes to bowling in the Super Over, SRH is spoilt for choices. They have perhaps the two best death overs bowlers in Pat Cummins and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. They also have T Natarajan, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Marco Jansen, and even Wanindu Hasaranga to use in super over.

6. Gujarat Titans- David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Shubman Gill; Mohammad Shami

Gujarat Titans have done well in their first 2 years of IPL, winning the title in 2022 and reaching the final in 2023. But in IPL 2024, they will have a new captain in Shubman Gill. He will have his strategies about the team, which includes the super over players as well. For the bowlers in Super Over, GT does not have to look further than Mohammad Shami. Shami famously bowled a super over full of yorkers against MI for Punjab Kings a couple of years back.

When it comes to batting, GT has multiple options like Rahul Tewatia, David Miller, and Shubman Gill himself who can maximize the super over with the bat. They also bought Azmatullah Omarzai and Shahrukh Khan in the recent options who can deliver the huge sixes in super over, if GT requires in IPL 2024.

Lucknow Super Giants made it into the playoffs in both IPL 2022 and 2023 and this time they will look to plan. They have a new coach in Justin Langer, who will come up with some new ideas for his kitty. When it comes to a super over-bowling attack, the first choice for LSG should be Mark Wood, as his pace and yorkers will be lethal in pressure situations.

Coming to the batting part, LSG has the likes of Quinton de Kock, Kyle Mayers, Nicholas Pooran, Marcus Stoinis, and Ayush Badoni, who can hit the big shots under pressure. Even someone like Krunal Pandya or Deepak Hooda, who are known for big shots might come in handy in crunch situations for LSG.

8. Rajasthan Royals- Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell; Trent Boult

Rajasthan Royals have a plethora of batters who can win them matches and come in handy in the super overs. They have the likes of Jos Buttler, captain Sanju Samson, and West Indies duo of Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell, who can hit the big shots with ease. You cannot count out Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, and Shubham Dubey as well when it comes to super overs.

On the bowling side, RR will look to trust Trent Boult for super over, as he can bowl some mean yorkers. Other options include Kuldeep Sen, Navdeep Saini, and even Ravichandran Ashwin as an out-of-the-box solution in super overs.

9. Punjab Kings- Jitesh Sharma, Sikandar Raza, Sam Curran; Arshdeep Singh

The Punjab Kings team will be looking to do better than their sixth-place finish in IPL 2023. They will again be led by Shikhar Dhawan and when it comes to super over, the franchise will have its plans. As for the bowlers in the crunch situation, PBKS has two of the best choices in Arshdeep Singh and Kagiso Rabada. Both possess very good variations and yorkers and have a ton of experience.

When it comes to batting, PBKS boasts of some good power hitters in Jitesh Sharma, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, and Sikandar Raza to name a few. They also bought Rilee Russouw in the IPL 2024 auction and the South African is known for his big-hitting exploits in T20 cricket.

Delhi Capitals are expected to be buoyed by the return of Rishabh Pant, their captain. Pant missed the IPL 2023 after suffering multiple injuries in a car accident. He is expected to return to competitive cricket in IPL 2024. Along with Pant, DC has a lot of firepower in batting for super overs. The likes of David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Harry Brook, Tristan Stubbs, and Kumar Kushagra, all can hit big shots with ease.

When it comes to bowling in the powerplay, expect DC to employ the services of Anrich Nortje, inarguably one of the fastest bowlers in IPL, especially if he is fit. If not, then DC has options for Lungi Ngidi, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, Ishant Sharma, or new buys like Jhye Richardson and Rasikh Salam.
