In the 33rd match of the Indian Premier League 2024, Punjab Kings hosted Mumbai Indians at the newly built Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh. The hosts won the toss and opted to field first on a balanced surface and Sam Curran, the stand-in skipper wanted to make the most of the dew in the later half of the match.

Mumbai Indians had a great innings with the bat and it was led by the No.1 T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav as well as their former skipper, Rohit Sharma. They had a great partnership of 81 runs and gave a good foundation for a good total on the scoreboard.

Harshal Patel and Sam Curran were good with the ball as they were able to derail the opposition at the end with a few slower balls. However, Tilak Varma’s cameo of 34 from 18 balls was vital as the Mumbai Indians reached a competitive total of 192/7 in their 20 overs.

Mumbai Indians overcome Punjab Kings with amazing bowling effort

In response, Punjab Kings were not able to have a great start as they lost Prabhsimran Singh in the first over. Both Rilee Rossouw and Sam Curran could not muster much and departed in the second over as Jasprit Bumrah bowled a lethal spell. Their problems didn’t end as Liam Livingstone gave away his wicket cheaply in the third over.

Harpreet Bhatia, the impact substitute for the team, joined Shashank Singh to take the innings forward for the hosts. However, Shreyas Gopal was able to take a stunning return catch in the seventh over to stun the hosts even more. Shashank was once again keeping the side in the game as he kept the scoreboard ticking and found a reliable partner in Jitesh Sharma. However, the latter was dismissed by Akash Madhwal in the 10th over of the innings.

Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh got together once again at the crease hoping to keep the team alive. The duo have been the unsung heroes of the Punjab Kings this season and were looking to take their side home again. Shashank lost his wicket to the magical Bumrah but Ashutosh had the confidence to play his shots.

The uncapped player kept the chase alive as he was able to score a fifty inside 23 balls. Harpreet Brar also played his strokes as he gave good support to Ashutosh Sharma. However, Gerald Coetzee took out the in-form batter and gave hope to the away side in the 18th over.

Hardik Pandya got the wicket of Brar but Rabada kept things alive by hitting a six when eight balls remained. On the first ball of the final over, Rabada was run-out through a brilliant run-out by Tilak Varma. In the end, Mumbai Indians won the match by 9 runs and moved to sixth position on the table.
