Gujarat Titans (GT) are battling it out against defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match 59 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. GT are currently at the bottom of the points table with seven defeats from 11 matches and they cannot afford one more defeat which will knock them out of the tournament.

On the other hand, CSK are fourth with six wins from 11 matches and one more win will strengthen their playoff qualification chances. With the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad favouring the chasing team, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and elected to field first.

Gujarat made a notable change to their side, dropping Joshua Little, who took four wickets in the previous match, to help Kartik Tyagi make his debut for the franchise. Meanwhile, Rachin Ravindra made a comeback to the CSK line-up by replacing Richard Gleeson.

Powerplay 1: Overs 0.1 to 6.0 (Mandatory – 58 runs, 0 wickets)

Captain Shubman Gill did not wait long to put his team’s intentions forward in the do-or-die match. The right-hander hit two boundaries in the first over against spinner Mitchell Santner. Tushar Deshpande bowled a tidy second over but Shardul Thakur conceded 11 runs in the following over. Runs continued to flow for GT as Sai Sudharshan also got into the groove.

Strategic Timeout 1: Gujarat Titans – 94/0 in 9 overs Shubman Gill (40* off 21), Sai Sudharsan (52* off 33)

Replacing Wriddhiman Saha in the opening slot with Sudarshan was effective as GT got off to a flying start which it had been missing for so long. The southpaw completed his half-century in the ninth over with a maximum. He reached the feat in just 32 balls. The two stitched a 94-run partnership before going for the first strategic break.

Gujarat Titans: 100 runs in 9.3 overs

The home team reached the 100-run mark with a single off Sai Sudharsan’s bat on the third ball of the 10th over. CSK continued to search for a maiden wicket as both the batters played some aggressive cricket.

Half-century: Shubman Gill 50* off 25 balls

Shubman Gill brought up his half-century with a maximum just like Sudharsan did two overs back. Simarjeet Singh returned to bowl his second over in the second half beginning, but the GT skipper gave him the worst possible welcome.

Gujarat Titans: 150 runs in 12.4 overs

CSK bowlers were clueless against GT’s left-right opening combo. The duo continued their aggressive play and brought up a 150-run stand with a boundary in the 13th over. This is the highest partnership for GT for any wickets.

Strategic Timeout 2: Gujarat Titans – 196/0 in 16 overs Shubman Gill (96* off 48), Sai Sudharsan (96* off 48)

The umpire signaled a second strategic time out with four overs left. Gill and Sudharsan collectively accumulated 196 runs in this phase and looked set to take the team total past 250.

Hundred: Shubman Gill 100* off 50 balls

The first innings eventually turned into a contest between GT openers. Both were in the race to score a century, but it was skipper Shubman Gill who crossed the milestone first. The right-hander brought out an aggressive celebration as he breached the 100-run mark with a boundary in the 17th over.

1st Wicket: GT 210-1 in 17.2 overs

Finally, CSK got their maiden wicket of the night. Tushar Deshpande delivered a slower delivery into the wicket and a mistimed shot from Sai Sudharsan resulted in a simple catch for Shivam Dube at extra cover. The southpaw’s outstanding knock came to an end soon after he notched up his maiden IPL century (103 off 51).

Innings Break: Gujarat Titans – 231/3 in 20.0 overs (David Miller 16* off 11, Shahrukh Khan 2 off 3)

At one point it looked like the GT 250 would go beyond 250 runs. But the CSK bowlers did well to concede only 41 runs in the last five overs. Back-to-back dismissals of Gill and Sudharsan helped CSK apply breaks in the scoring rate.
