Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are battling it out against Delhi Capitals (DC) in match 47 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. KKR are currently second in the points table with five wins out of eight matches. On the other hand, DC are sixth with five wins from ten matches and are desperate for a win.

DC skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and opted to bat at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. This was only the second time a team has chosen to bat first at this venue in 39 IPL matches since 2017. Mitchell Starc and Vaibhav Arora returned to the line-up for KKR, Prithvi Shaw returned for DC and Mukesh Kumar, who serves as an Impact Player, is replaced by Rasikh Salam Dar.

1st Wicket: DC 17-1 in 1.3 overs

Prithvi Shaw got off to a blazing start, smashing Mitchell Starc for three boundaries in the first over. But the DC opener (13 off 7) was dismissed in the very next over by Vaibhav Arora. The umpire did not signal out for caught-behind at first, but Phil Salt was confident and KKR sent it upstairs.

Powerplay 1: Overs 0.1 to 6.0 (Mandatory – 67 runs, 3 wickets)

DC managed to keep the run rate in check at the end of the powerplay but they lost three wickets in the process. Jake Fraser-McGurk smashed Mitchell Starc for a six and a four but fell in the same third over. Shai Hope was next man to return to the pavilion as Vaibhav Arora’s cracking delivery took his bails off.

Abishek Porel and captain Rishabh Pant then combined to give DC a good powerplay. It was also time for the first strategic time out as players dispersed for a drinks break.

Delhi Capitals: 100 runs in 12.2 overs (74 balls)

Right after the powerplay, Harshit Rana took the wicket of Abishek Porel and put the Capitals in trouble. Pant and Axar Patel gave DC some relief by scoring 13 runs in the tenth over. However, mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy got rid of the DC skipper (27 off 20) in the very next over. Delhi reached the 100-run mark in the 13th over but lost another big wicket of Tristan Stubbs (4 off 7).

Strategic Timeout 2: Delhi Capitals – 128/8 in 16 overs Kuldeep Yadav (20* off 9), Rasikh Dar Salam (2* off 5)

Wickets kept falling for DC as KKR spinners spun a web around their middle order. Sunil Narine claimed the wicket of Axar Patel and Chakaravarthy got his third wicket of the night by dismissing Delhi’s Impact Sub Kumar Kushagra. Mitchell Starc continued to leak runs as Kuldeep Yadav smashed him for a couple of boundaries in the 16th over.

Innings Break: Delhi Capitals – 153/9 in 20.0 overs (Kuldeep Yadav 35* off 26, Lizaad Williams 1* off 2)

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, DC somehow managed to manage a decent yet below-par score of 153 in their 20 overs. When DC were 111/8 it looked like KKR would end the innings quickly. However, Kuldeep Yadav’s 26-ball 35 gave the visitors something to fight in the second half.
