IPL 2024: Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, 46th Match - Who Said What?

Sunrisers Hyderabad suffered a humiliating 78-run defeat at the hands of Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and dropped to fourth on the points table. The visitors looked clueless with the bat and failed to adapt to the conditions which led to their downfall in Chennai.

Batting first, CSK struggled a bit but skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad took control of the situation as he made 98 runs off 54 balls. Batting at No.3, Daryl Mitchell finally showed his class as the New Zealand all-rounder made 52 runs off 32 balls. The duo set the tone for CSK as Shivam Dube, who joined him in the middle after the fall of two wickets, once again had a terrific day with the bat, as he smashed 39* runs off 20 balls, which helped CSK post 212 runs in the first innings.

When it came to the chase, the SRH batters never looked to be in control. The wickets fell like a house of cards and no one in the middle could take control of the situation. When the openers start well, everyone seems to contribute but when they fail, the middle order fails as well and that is one area that the team needs to address at the moment. Meanwhile, Tushar Deshpande had a terrific day with the ball, as he picked four wickets in the middle.

1. Another good night for Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 98 runs proved to be the difference in the end. He was there for the entire innings which was crucial as none of the SRH batters managed to stick through the hard times. The captain led from the front and eventually got the job done once again.

2. Shivam Dube continues to be the hulk of IPL 2024

Just like Captain America told Hulk to smash in The Avengers, it looks like someone has said Dube the same thing ahead of IPL 2024. The all-rounder has no other template as he smacked the ball from the get-go. The 30-year-old eventually hit 39 runs off 20 balls and is currently on the verge of making it to India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

3. Tushar Deshpande -the silent killer

Barely any fan predicts Tushar Deshpande to be the MVP with the ball, but he delivers time and again for CSK. Against SRH, he picked up dangerous wickets of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma and Anmolpreet Singh to reduce the Pat Cummins-led side to 40/3 at one stage. SRH couldn’t recover from that and eventually suffered a humiliating defeat and moved to fourth on the points table.

Losing captain Pat Cummins said:

(On would he have batted first in hindsight) Not really. We thought it was our best chance to win. They batted well to get to 210 but with thought we were in with a chance with our batting lineup, the pitch was playing well too. We’re pretty happy with how the batting lineup is going. Everyone in that lineup has performed and won us a game at some point in the tournament. It’s definitely dewy now but it was the same in the first innings as well. We’ll bounce back quickly.

Winning skipper and POTM Ruturaj Gaikwad said:

“Feeling pretty good. Tough to play in such wet conditions, and to be able to win by 70-odd runs is a clinical performance. Was blessing in disguise at toss. Everything is good (injury concern?). Too hot and humid conditions. Even the last game, was there batting for 20 overs and fielding for 20 overs. Today also almost same. Wasn’t thinking about hundred. Wanted to make sure we get to 220-odd. Was disappointed that I missed 4-5 hits at the back end. During innings break I felt it could make a difference and I was upset. But thankfully it was enough. Last game we made some errors. Some loose balls here and there. Today we were outstanding in the field. Stuck to the plans and knew what the conditions were. With impact player rule, you always want the extra 20 runs. Never know what par score is. That was one area – not getting wickets in powerplay. That’s the only way it can put opposition in back foot. He’s bowling really well. His hard work is paying off. Special mention to Jaddu as well. In these wet conditions to go for 22 runs, that was the match turning spell. I’m not vocal. Can’t tell seniors in the dressing room what to do. You have to take the back seat and let them do their job,”
