Defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) secured their fifth win in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) as they defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 55 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday, April 25. The win propelled Hardik Pandya and Co. to jump two places up to the second spot in the IPL 2023 points table. Meanwhile, the five-time champions have suffered four defeats in the IPL 2023.

MI skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first. GT set a massive 208-run target in 20 overs, with opener Shubman Gill (56 off 34) scoring a brilliant half-century. For MI, Piyush Chawla picked two wickets, while Arjun Tendulkar, Jason Behrendorff, Riley Meredith, and Kumar Kartikeya scalped one each.

Tendulkar opened the attack for Mumbai and got a breakthrough in the third over itself as he dismissed wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha. Piyush Chawla struck in the seventh over to remove skipper Hardik for 13 runs and GT were 50/2 in 6.1 overs. Gill, however, scored a half-century as GT kept their run rate up in the powerplay.

When Gill was sent back to the pavilion by Kumar Kartikeya, David Miller came in and scored 46 off 22 deliveries. However, Jason Behrendorff ended Miller’s stay after Vijay Shankar and Abhinav Manohar were also dismissed by the Mumbai bowlers.

During MI’s chase, GT skipper Hardik struck early, removing opposition captain Rohit Sharma for only two runs. Afghan all-rounder Rashid Khan then struck twice, dismissing keeper-batter Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma. Meanwhile, Noor Ahmad dismissed Australia all-rounder Cameron Green for 33 runs. Noor struck again, this time dismissing Tim David and Suryakumar Yadav.

Mohit Sharma removed Arjun Tendulkar in the penultimate over as GT restricted MI to 152/9 in 20 overs. Notably, this was MI’s greatest loss in terms of run margin since 2017.
