India is set to open a five-match T20I series against New Zealand on October 22, 2026, at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The series runs through to November 1, 2026, with matches spread across Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India named a 16-member squad on October 6, 2026, with Shreyas Iyer as captain and Tilak Varma as vice-captain. Two returns stand out in the selection: Bhuvneshwar Kumar comes back to the T20I setup after nearly four years away, and Varun Chakravarthy is recalled after recovering from injury. India head into the series on the back of a 2-2 draw against West Indies in their most recent T20I assignment.

Based on the announced squad, here is India’s strongest possible playing XI:

Top-order: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Ishan Kishan

Abhishek is likely to open the innings and provide India with an aggressive start in the powerplay. The left-handed batter’s ability to attack from the outset makes him an important part of the team’s T20I plans. He can put pressure on the opposition early and give India the momentum they need at the top.

Samson could partner Abhishek at the top of the order. The wicketkeeper-batter offers an attacking option and can capitalise on fielding restrictions. Kishan could slot in at No. 3, providing India with another aggressive left-handed option. His ability to take on both pace and spin makes him a suitable choice in the position. Kishan can maintain the scoring rate after the powerplay while ensuring the opposition does not settle into a comfortable bowling rhythm.

Middle-order: Shreyas Iyer (c), Tilak Varma (vc), Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy

Shreyas Iyer is likely to bat at No. 4 and lead the side. His experience and ability to handle pressure could prove valuable in the middle overs. He can rotate the strike, build partnerships and accelerate when required, while also taking responsibility for guiding the team during difficult phases.

Tilak is expected to be another key component of India’s middle order. His ability to adapt to different match situations makes him a useful option at No. 5. As vice-captain, he will also share leadership responsibilities with Iyer. Dube’s power-hitting makes him a dangerous batter in the middle and death overs. He can target spinners and clear the boundary with his strong hitting. He also provides an additional bowling option if the team needs to manage its frontline bowlers.

Axar brings balance to the side with his all-round abilities. He can contribute valuable runs in the lower middle order and provide control with his left-arm spin. His experience makes him a useful option in different match situations. Reddy could provide India with an additional seam-bowling option alongside his batting ability. His presence would give the captain greater flexibility when managing the bowling attack. He could also strengthen the lower order and help India maintain depth in both departments.

Bowlers: Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy

Bhuvneshwar‘s return adds considerable experience to India’s pace attack. His ability to swing the new ball and use variations in the death overs could make him an important option against New Zealand. He will also have an opportunity to re-establish himself in the T20I setup. Arshdeep is likely to lead India’s left-arm pace department. His ability to pick up wickets in the powerplay and deliver yorkers at the death makes him a key member of the bowling unit. He can also provide a different angle alongside Bhuvneshwar.

Varun could lead India’s spin attack with his variations and ability to trouble batters. His role will be particularly important in the middle overs, when India will look to break partnerships and restrict New Zealand’s scoring rate.
