India are set to face New Zealand in the 1st T20I on October 22. The selection panel faces key decisions across all three departments as the two sides meet in the series opener.

The selection debate covers the opening combination, the composition of the middle order and the balance between pace and spin in the bowling attack. Multiple predicted playing XIs have emerged for the fixture, reflecting genuine competition in several positions.

Here is the India predicted playing XI for 1st T20I vs New Zealand:

Top Order: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Ishan Kishan

Abhishek Sharma is the frontrunner to open the batting, having accumulated 2071 T20I runs. The left-hander brings both experience and volume of runs to the top of the order. Sanju Samson, with 1735 T20I runs, is expected to keep wicket and bat in the top order. Ishan Kishan provides a strong alternative with 1954 T20I runs and offers another wicketkeeping option for the selectors to consider. The presence of two capable wicketkeepers in the top order gives the team management flexibility in how they construct the batting lineup.

Middle Order: Shreyas Iyer (C), Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel

Shreyas Iyer captains the side and is expected to bat in the middle order, bringing 1694 T20I runs to the position. Tilak Varma, with 1840 T20I runs, is set to provide stability alongside the captain. Naman Dhir adds genuine all-round value, having scored 38 T20I runs and taken five wickets, making him a useful option in the lower middle order. Axar Patel strengthens the balance further with 787 T20I runs and 113 T20I wickets, giving the side a reliable spinning all-rounder who can contribute with both bat and ball across different match situations.

Lower Order/Bowlers: Mayank Yadav, Prince Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh

The lower order and bowling attack feature four pace options. Arshdeep Singh leads the attack with 145 T20I wickets and is expected to open the bowling. Bhuvneshwar Kumar brings 90 T20I wickets and considerable experience in the seam department, offering control in the powerplay and at the death. Mayank Yadav, with 13 T20I wickets, provides genuine pace variety, while Prince Yadav adds another option with 10 T20I wickets. The four-pronged pace attack, supported by Axar Patel’s spin, gives India a well-rounded bowling combination for the series opener.
