IND vs SA 2025: ‘Dhruv Jurel should bat at No. 6’ – Cheteshwar Pujara backs youngster to feature in Kolkata Test

Former Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara has expressed his support for young wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel to continue his fine form and cement a spot in India’s playing XI for the upcoming first Test against South Africa. The much-awaited clash is scheduled to begin on November 14 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

With both sides aiming for a strong start in the two-match series, India face an interesting selection decision regarding Jurel’s inclusion. The youngster, who recently struck twin centuries in the second unofficial Test against South Africa A, has emerged as a leading contender for the wicketkeeper’s role. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has also hinted that Jurel will find a spot in the Playing XI.

Pujara praised Jurel’s maturity and temperament under pressure, highlighting how the youngster has consistently performed with composure and responsibility. The veteran batter believes that the No. 6 position would perfectly suit Jurel in India’s current setup, offering stability to the middle order while providing the flexibility to accelerate when required.

“Firstly, with the kind of form he is in, Dhruv Jurel definitely deserves a spot in the playing XI. I believe he will bat at number six, that’s my guess. Depending on the pitch, India will most likely go with three spinners and two seamers. That’s how I see the team combination and how Jurel fits into the XI,” said Pujara on JioHotstar.

Even as Jurel strengthens his case with consistent performances, all eyes are now on the returning Rishabh Pant, who has rejoined India’s Test setup. Pant’s explosive batting and match-winning instincts have long cemented his place as India’s premier wicketkeeper in red-ball cricket. However, Jurel’s recent exploits have added a new dimension to the team’s selection dynamics.

His composed temperament, adaptability under pressure, and ability to anchor the innings make him a strong contender. While Pant continues to be the first-choice option, Jurel’s rise ensures India now have enviable depth in the wicketkeeping department, a dependable backup capable of seamlessly stepping in when required.
