The latest development has emerged, which says that Shreyas Iyer will be the captain of India A side for the upcoming home series against Australia A. The Mumbai batter is the frontrunner to lead the side, especially after his success for the Indian team in the One-Day Internationals, where he also emerged as the highest run-getter for the side during the Champions Trophy 2025.

Iyer has been running out of favour from the Indian team currently, as he failed to make the cut for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, despite showing good form in the previous Ranji season. He was also among the top run-scorers during the Indian Premier League 2025, with more than 600 runs at an amazing average of 50.33, where he also led Punjab Kings to their first-ever final in 11 years. However, he was not picked in India’s 15-man squad for the Asia Cup 2025, which begins on September 9.

Currently representing the West Zone in the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2025, the Mumbai batter got off to a start with his 25 runs in the second semi-final versus Central Zone, but couldn’t convert it into a big score. However, the reports have suggested that a single performance will not hamper Iyer’s case for India A’s captaincy for the upcoming multi-format series against the Australian side.

According to Cricbuzz, Iyer will be on the selectors’ radar for the Australia A series, which is set to begin on September 16 with a couple of unofficial Tests. Both the four-day fixtures will be played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. They will be followed three games in the 50-over format as well, set to be played at Kanpur’s historic Green Park Stadium.
