‘If 12 players are not playing at international level, then what’s the need for it in IPL?’ – Mukesh Kumar on Impact Player rule

The Impact Player rule in the IPL has divided the opinions in the cricketing world about whether the rule enhances the game or disrupts its traditional format. Delhi Capitals (DC) bowler Mukesh Kumar has voiced his opinion, arguing that the rule provides an unfair advantage to batters and reduces the role of bowlers.

Introduced in 2023, the Impact Player rule allows teams to substitute a player from their starting XI at any point during the match. This rule was intended to add tactical flexibility and excitement to the game. However, as the 2024 season has progressed, concerns about the rule’s effect on the balance between bat and ball have grown.

Earlier Indian captain Rohit Sharma had also criticised it, stating that it hampers the development of all-rounders. The rule motivates teams to bring in specialist batters or bowlers depending on the match situation, potentially reducing opportunities for players who excel in both departments.

What is the need for it in IPL?: Mukesh Kumar

“If 12 players are not playing at the international level, then what is the need for it in IPL? With 12 players, even if four wickets are down, the next player is not scared of getting out or making the team stable, they come and play their shots. So either the nature of tracks should be changed or 12 players should not be allowed,” Mukesh told ESPNcricinfo.

Furthermore, the pacer argues that the rule favours batters, who can be replaced with a fresh player even after a flurry of wickets. This leaves bowlers with no respite, as they must continue to face a constant stream of incoming batters, often in favorable batting conditions.

The new rule has undoubtedly contributed to the extraordinary high-scoring trend observed in the 2024 IPL season. Five of the six highest team totals in IPL history have been achieved this year, with teams frequently surpassing the 220-run mark, a rarity in previous seasons.
