Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir opined that spinner Ravichandran Ashwin might not make the cut for the starting lineup in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 final against Australia at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19. Gambhir expressed doubts over Ashwin’s inclusion, hinting no team changes for India ahead of the crucial clash.

India have secured their fourth ODI World Cup final berth, while Australia advanced to their record-extending eighth final. The Men in Blue dominated the league stage with an impeccable record, winning all nine matches and claiming the top spot. Gambhir stressed the team’s successful formula, indicating skepticism about Ashwin’s spot in the starting XI. He urged India to maintain the winning combination that has proved effective thus far.

“I don’t think so (on Ashwin playing the final). I don’t see a place for him and why would you even tinker with what is working for you. What better performance can you expect from your five bowlers,” said Gambhir as quoted by India Today.

We have spoken a lot about batters and I feel it is time to praise the bowlers: Gambhir

Australia rebounded after initial losses to India and South Africa, stringing together seven consecutive victories to secure third place in the group stage. Praising India’s bowling prowess, the Delhi batter emphasized their remarkable performance under pressure. The Indian bowling brigade, led by Bumrah, Shami, Siraj, Yadav, and Jadeja, accounted for a significant 85 out of the total 95 wickets taken by the team in the ODI World Cup, warranting accolades for their contribution.

“After Hardik’s injury, we have spoken that with just five specialist bowlers, teams will look to target one or two of them. However, that hasn’t happened because of the quality of the five bowlers. We have spoken a lot about batters and I feel it is time to praise the bowlers for delivering under pressure,” Gambhir added.
