Indian spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule has backed star batter Shreyas Iyer, saying he possesses strong leadership qualities and consistently looks to contribute in every match. Iyer has been appointed captain, with Tilak Varma named vice-captain for the upcoming Ireland and England T20I series.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India decision comes after World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav was left out of the leadership role. Iyer’s elevation has largely been attributed to his successful captaincy record in the IPL over recent years. Backing the move, Bahutule highlighted Iyer’s tactical awareness, fearless decision-making, and player-first approach, describing him as a leader capable of getting the best out of his team while leading from the front.

“Shreyas possesses ideal leadership qualities. He is someone who strives to perform in every single match, constantly looking for opportunities to contribute to the team’s victory. Crucially, he has an excellent understanding of both himself and his players, giving them the freedom to play their natural game. His calm and composed demeanour on the field brings tremendous clarity to the squad,” said Bahutule on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra also praised Shreyas Iyer, stating that he leads by example and inspires teammates through his performances on the field. Meanwhile, former cricketer and coach Pravin Amre said he admires the confidence Iyer brings to the captaincy role. Amre highlighted the right-handed batter’s willingness to make bold decisions and take responsibility in pressure situations, noting that his ability to make tough calls sets him apart as a leader.

“Secondly, he has a brilliant understanding of the game and really reads its pulse. Especially in T20I cricket, which moves at a rapid pace, being able to make quick decisions is vital, and Shreyas does that exceptionally well,” said Chopra.

“I love the sheer confidence he brings to the role. He does not back away from taking tough decisions on the field, and more importantly, he has the conviction to back those decisions completely,” said Amre.
