Kris Srikkanth lauded Shubman Gill for how the Gujarat Titans’ captain used Jason Holder in the game against the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday, April 26, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The former India opener said that Gill did well to bowl out Holder when Ruturaj Gaiwad, Dewald Brevis, and Shivam Dube were struggling to get accustomed to the sluggish surface.
Srikkanth interestingly mentioned that Holder has never bowled so economically in his career. The former West Indies captain conceded just 22 runs in his four-over spell. Chennai Super Kings were restricted to a below-par score of 158/7 after being invited to bat first.
“Gill did one smart thing by sneaking in four overs of Holder when Gaikwad, Brevis, and Dube were struggling. Holder probably never had such an economical spell in his lifetime,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
However, Srikkanth opined that Gill didn’t use the spinners well. The cricketer-turned-expert said that Manav Suthar should have bowled in tandem with Rashid Khan.
“He overused Arshad Khan. Manav Suthar is brilliant, but GT are wasting him. They should use him throughout in the middle overs and in tandem with Rashid Khan. Rashid barely bowled, while Arshad Khan kept bowling,” Srikkanth stated.
Sai Sudharsan, who smashed 87 off 46 balls, received high praise from Srikkanth. His excellent knock helped Gujarat chase the 159-run target in just 16.4 overs, with eight wickets to spare.
“He plays to his strengths. He knows his limitations. He starts off playing in a scratchy manner by guiding balls in the third man region. But suddenly he explodes and makes up for it. In the first 30 runs, it always feels like he’s struggling. But he somehow survives that phase and makes it up brilliantly. Once he gets his eye in, he starts dominating,” he said.
Ruturaj could have done what Sai Sudarshan did in this match: Srikkanth
Ruturaj Gaikwad has been having a dismal campaign with the bat. On Sunday, he scored his first half-century of the season. However, his unbeaten 74-run knock off 60 balls didn’t turn out to be very fruitful for the Men in Yellow. Srikkanth said that Gaikwad could have played like Sudharsan did, as it would have helped Chennai get to a competitive total.
“Ruturaj could have done a mini Tilak Varma, though. If he had done that, instead of 158, maybe CSK would have got 180 to 190. Ruturaj could have done what Sai Sudarshan did in this match,” said Srikkanth (via the aforementioned source).
