‘He is an honest man’ – Javed Miandad breaks down while defending Imran Khan

Javed Miandad has publicly defended Imran Khan, describing the imprisoned former Pakistan prime minister as an honest man despite their complicated history spanning decades. The two cricketers share a bond that stretches back to the 1970s, when both represented Pakistan at the highest level. Their partnership proved instrumental in one of Pakistan cricket’s greatest moments.

Miandad spoke emotionally about Khan’s character and current circumstances while reflecting on their shared journey. Khan remains in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, facing over 180 cases across Pakistan as of February 2026 following his re-arrest on August 5, 2023, in connection with the Toshakhana case involving the misuse of state gifts.

“He is an honest man. He is not someone who engages in corrupt practices; otherwise, he would have done a lot of things. What will happen if you let him out? Will he eat or damage someone? He is also someone’s son. I always think about what he must be doing.” Miandad said as quoted by Cricket News.

Health concerns have emerged during Khan’s imprisonment, including significant vision loss in one eye attributed to delayed medical care in early 2026. Miandad’s emotional defence reflects the broader concern among former cricketers who have known Khan throughout his career and continue to advocate for his welfare.

The 1992 World Cup partnership

The 1992 World Cup final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground remains a defining moment in their shared legacy. Pakistan had reached a precarious position at 24 for 2 before Miandad and Khan combined for a crucial partnership. Khan scored 72 while Miandad contributed 58 as they added 139 runs for the third wicket, helping Pakistan recover and ultimately claim the trophy against England.

International support for Imran Khan

A group of former international captains, including Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Greg Chappell, recently issued a joint appeal calling for proper medical treatment for Khan. Australia’s current captain Pat Cummins has also spoken publicly, emphasising that Khan should be afforded basic dignity. Khan’s sons, Sulaiman and Kasim, participated in an interview with Michael Atherton during Sky Sports’ coverage of the England-Pakistan Test at Lord’s, where they raised significant concerns about their father’s wellbeing and the conditions he faces in prison.
