‘Had he been Indian, for how much would he have been sold in the IPL?’ – Aakash Chopra on Shai Hope’s valuation after ton in Hyderabad

Shai Hope delivered a match-winning performance for West Indies in the fourth T20I against India at Hyderabad on October 14, 2026. The West Indies batter scored an unbeaten 102 off 50 balls, striking four fours and nine sixes to guide his team to a 24-run victory. Hope’s century was his second of the T20I series and his fourth of the tour, establishing him as the standout performer across the five-match contest.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra reflected on Hope’s exceptional form during the series and posed a hypothetical question about the batter’s market value in the Indian Premier League. Chopra highlighted the consistency and quality of Hope’s batting, noting the impact he had made across multiple innings in India.

“If Shai Hope hadn’t been West Indian, and had he been Indian, for how much would he have been sold in the IPL? Had he been Australian instead of being West Indian, for how much would he have been sold in the auction?” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“If there is a player like that and the auction is about to come, you feel the guy would break everyone’s bank. He would have got at least ₹15-18 crore had he been Indian. He would have surely gone for $1-1.25 million had he been Australian because their coaches would have kept lifting the paddle,” he added.

Hope’s unbeaten 102 earned him the Player of the Match award and marked a historic milestone for West Indies cricket. With this century, Hope became the first West Indies player to score three T20I hundreds, cementing his status as a key performer in the format.

Rare consistency across seven innings

Chopra was struck by Hope’s consistency across the seven innings he had played during the tour. The analyst observed that foreign batters rarely produced such sustained excellence when touring India, combining technical soundness with aggressive intent.

“He has scored a century again. He has been absolutely stellar. I don’t remember a foreign batter going after scoring four centuries and one half-century in seven innings after coming to India,” Chopra said.

“If a maverick like AB de Villiers or a storm like Chris Gayle comes, you say you would lay down your arms. Seeing Shai Hope, you feel he plays cautiously and silkenly, and that you would grab him. You aren’t able to grab him, and then you feel you can slow him down at least, but you aren’t able to do that either,” he added.

Chopra emphasised that Hope’s performance had made him impossible to overlook in the series narrative. The analyst noted that Indian bowlers were discussing Hope’s technical batting and his ability to hit boundaries consistently and correctly.

“He has made the most of the opportunity he got in this series, and now you can’t ignore. We are also talking about it daily. The Indian bowlers would also be discussing that he hits them daily, and he hits them technically properly. It pinches even more,” Chopra said.

The fourth T20I victory leveled the series at 2-2, with one match remaining in the five-match contest scheduled to conclude on October 17, 2026. Hope’s performance underscored West Indies’ competitive strength in the series and his personal emergence as a dominant force in T20I cricket.
