New Zealand Cricket has added two experienced former internationals to the White Ferns’ backroom for the upcoming three-match T20I series in Australia. Martin Guptill and Andre Adams have been confirmed as support staff alongside interim head coach Dean Brownlie, with the squad set to depart for Australia on October 12.

Brownlie, a former New Zealand men’s top-order batter, was appointed to the interim head coach role after Ben Sawyer departed in September following a review of the women’s high-performance structure. His appointment is limited to this three-match T20I assignment in Australia.

What experience do Guptill and Adams bring to the White Ferns setup?

Guptill accumulated 367 international appearances for New Zealand across all formats between 2009 and 2022, making him among the most experienced players the country has produced. That breadth of exposure across batting and fielding at the highest level underpins his role in the coaching group.

Adams represented New Zealand 47 times, primarily in ODI cricket, between 2001 and 2007, operating as a medium-pace-bowling allrounder. He is no stranger to the White Ferns environment, having toured with the squad in 2017 and 2023. His most recent coaching work came with Birmingham Phoenix in the women’s Hundred, giving him current exposure to elite women’s cricket.

“I’m really excited to be joining the White Ferns and looking forward to working with such a talented group of players. The White Ferns have achieved a huge amount in recent years and there’s a lot of exciting talent coming through. If I can help add a few extra tools to the players’ games and support their growth, then that’s something I’ll be really proud of,” Guptill said, as quoted by Cricinfo.

What does the T20I schedule in Australia look like?

All three fixtures are scheduled at North Sydney Oval, with matches on October 18, October 20 and October 22. The coaching group will remain in place for the full duration of the tour.

“It’s great to be back involved with the White Ferns. Having worked with the team before I know what a special environment it is and how much pride the players and staff take in representing New Zealand. Opportunities like this are exciting because you get to test yourselves against one of the best teams in the world, and we’re looking forward to taking that head on together,” Adams said.
