India face West Indies in the opening T20I of a five-match series at Lucknow on October 6, 2026. The tour comprises three ODI and five T20I matches, following India’s 2-1 victory over West Indies in the three-match ODI series. The squad selection comes shortly after India’s Asian Games campaign, where Shreyas Iyer’s team successfully defended the men’s cricket gold medal by defeating Pakistan by 19 runs in the summit clash on October 3, 2026.

Morne Morkel, India’s bowling coach, has indicated that captain Gautam Gambhir is likely to make changes to the playing XI for the opening T20I. Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Monday, October 5, 2026, Morkel addressed the team’s squad-management approach ahead of the next World Cup.

“I’m pretty sure, you know, Gautam will look to rotate. I mean, as I said, that is up to the selectors and the coach and the captain in terms of the playing XI, or which playing XI will be the best to win a game for India in our next World Cup. And that has always been the min focus,” Morkel said in a pre-match press conference.

The rotation strategy reflects India’s focus on preparing multiple options for the upcoming World Cup. Twelve of the 14 players from the Asian Games squad have been retained in the squad for the West Indies T20Is, indicating continuity alongside selective changes. The inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the squad provides an opportunity for the young talent to develop in the international environment.

Sooryavanshi’s development in the squad environment

Morkel emphasised the value of squad exposure and learning opportunities for emerging players like Sooryavanshi. The India bowling coach highlighted how time spent in the international environment, even without guaranteed game time, contributes significantly to a young player’s development and understanding of match situations.

“We all know the talent of Vaibhav. I think the more time he spends in this environment with the quality players, the more time he trains at this standard, will only be great for his cricket. And if he’s not getting that game time, he’s still on a bus, in the dugout, in the hotel with guys with a lot of experience. And I think with him sharing that sort of dressing room and talking through guys, just actually watching how the guys go through their processes and how they set up innings will be key for him,” Morkel added.

The rotation approach signals India’s intent to balance immediate performance with long-term squad development. With the World Cup as the primary objective, the team management is using the West Indies series to assess different combinations and give players exposure in competitive conditions.
