India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has acknowledged that head coach Gautam Gambhir is quite individualistic in his approach. Bumrah offered insights into Gambhir’s coaching style ahead of India’s upcoming five-match Test series against England, which begins on Friday at Headingley in Leeds.

The right-arm fast bowler noted that Gambhir tends to step in only when necessary and prefers not to address the team in a group setting. Bumrah added that the former India opener is navigating an interesting phase in Indian cricket.

“He is a person who is very individualistic. He will have one-on-one chats with the person where he feels that he is supposed to interfere. You know, when people are going in one direction and he has some thoughts about that. I think he is handling an interesting phase in Indian cricket,” Bumrah told Sky Sports.

Bumrah mentioned that the team has undergone some changes and is currently in a transitional phase. The 31-year-old emphasized the need for greater patience and composure, especially among the younger players.

“Two tours ago, our team was completely different, and right now it is heading towards a transition. They will now require a lot more patience and a lot more calm with the young players. He is very calm in his approach, and the players are nice and happy,” he concluded.

Bumrah also revealed that workload management was a key reason he never considered taking up captaincy. India will be led by Shubman Gill on the upcoming tour, as he takes charge of one of the most inexperienced Indian squads to play on English soil.

“Before Rohit (Sharma) and Virat (Kohli) retired, during the IPL, I had spoken to the BCCI, that I had discussed workload going forward in a five-match Test series. I have spoken to people who manage my back. We came to the conclusion that we have to be a little more smart, then I called the BCCI that I don’t want to be looked at for the leadership role because I won’t be able to play all the Test matches,” Bumrah said.
