England vs New Zealand, 1st ODI, Stats Review: Conway’s classic Hundred, Daryl Mitchell’s Purple patch and other Stats

Both Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell delivered terrific unbeaten centuries, with Conway scoring 111 runs, and Daryl Mitchell contributing 118 runs, helping the Kiwis secure a resounding eight-wicket victory. New Zealand defeated England by a significant margin in the first One-Day International (ODI) held in Cardiff. With this win, the Kiwis took a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

In terms of how the game unfolded, skipper Tom Latham won the toss and chose to field first. Harry Brook and Dawid Malan got off to an excellent start, putting on 80 runs for the opening partnership. David Malan notched up his fourth ODI fifty, but the breakthrough came when Rachin Ravindra dismissed him for 54 runs. In the very next over, Lockie Ferguson claimed the wicket of Harry Brook, who had scored 25 runs.

Rachin Ravindra struck again, this time removing Joe Root for just 6 runs. Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler then forged an 88-run partnership before Ravindra took the wicket of Ben Stokes, who contributed 52 runs. Jos Buttler registered the fourth 50 of the innings and scored 72 runs. In the death overs, Liam Livingstone’s quickfire 52 runs and David Willey’s 21 runs propelled England to a total of 291/6 in their allotted 50 overs.

In response, New Zealand also got off to a solid start, with an opening partnership of 61 runs. However, Adil Rashid provided the breakthrough by dismissing Will Young for 29 runs. Conway then built another partnership, this time with Henry Nicholls, adding 56 runs. David Willey claimed his second wicket, that of Henry Nicholls, who scored 26 runs. The duo of Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell stitched together an unbeaten 180-run partnership for the third wicket, guiding the visitors to victory in the 46th over. Conway’s stellar century earned him the Player of the Match award.

Meanwhile, here are some of the important stats and numbers from the 1st ODI between New Zealand and England:

17.33- Joe Root has accumulated only 104 runs in his last six ODI innings, with his highest score being 86 runs, maintaining a poor average of 17.33.

5-Jos Buttler has now joined the ranks of Graham Gooch, Allan Lamb, Graham Thorpe, and Eoin Morgan for hitting five 50+ scores for England against New Zealand in ODIs. Joe Root and David Gower hold the first and second spots with eight and seven such scores, respectively.

4-This marks the third instance of four England players achieving 50+ scores against New Zealand in a single ODI innings in Cardiff. The previous two occurrences were in Napier in 2008 and Birmingham in 2015.

3-Adil Rashid became the third England bowler to reach the milestone of 100 ODI wickets in England. James Anderson and Darren Gough hold the top two spots with 131 and 108 scalps, respectively.

3/48-Rachin Ravindra achieved his best ODI bowling figures of 3/48, surpassing his previous best of 3/65.

118*-Daryl Mitchell registered his second-highest score of 118* in ODIs, with his highest score being 129 against Pakistan earlier this year.

111*-Devon Conway achieved his third-highest ODI score of 111*, with his first and second-highest scores being 138 and 126, respectively.

52.75-Devon Conway has scored 844 runs in 18 innings of his ODI career, boasting an incredible average of 52.75.

2-The partnership of 180* runs between Conway and Daryl Mitchell is the second-highest partnership in Cardiff in ODI history. The first one was a 224-run partnership between Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan against New Zealand in 2017.

58.82-Daryl Mitchell completed 1000 runs against England across formats, maintaining an incredible average of 58.82.

103.75. In his last five ODI innings, Daryl Mitchell has scored 415 runs, averaging an impressive 103.75.
