ENG vs NZ 2026: ‘This isn’t fair balance’ – Vaughan, Hussain slam Lord’s pitch after Day 2

Former England cricketers-turned-experts Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan have expressed their condemnation of the Lord’s pitch after 33 wickets fell in the first two days of the first Test between England and New Zealand.

Former England skipper Hussain alluded to the variable bounce and pace on the wicket, with balls carrying or keeping low off the wicket. He added that the quality of bowling on a wicket which is on show among the two teams means the ball has had a much larger say than the bat.

“Look at the very first delivery of the Test match, [which] rolled along the ground. All the way through, it has lacked pace and when it has got quicker, then suddenly it starts misbehaving up as well. I can tell you as a batter, nothing is worse [than] up-and-down bounce – and then you’ve got seam movement, and the slope,” Hussain said on Sky Sports’ coverage, as reported by ESPNcricinfo

“It means batting becomes impossible with the quality of fast bowling that is on show… This ground has got so much going for it. The attention to detail at this ground in the periphery is absolutely spot-on, but the bit in the middle is the most important bit and it’s not good enough at the moment,” he added.

Former England captain Vaughan stated that the contest is not offering a fair balance between the bat and ball, and alluded to the pair of Joe Root and Kane Williamson, who were both hard done by extra bounce off the surface. In contrast, Jacob Bethell was bowled off a ball which pitched on a but crept low underneath his bat to crash onto the off-stump.

“Test match cricket is meant to be a test. It’s not a test for the bowlers this week, because it’s too easy. You want a fair balance. This isn’t a fair balance between bat and ball. You’re talking [about] great players that are going out to bat and making it look so difficult – because it is. The MCC know that this pitch isn’t up to standard… I actually feel sorry for the batters, having to come out at the home of cricket. This is the best place to play cricket, and I just feel very fortunate that I didn’t have to bat on many pitches like this,” Vaughan told the BBC’s Test Match Special.

New Zealand’s Nathan Smith, who finished with figures of 6 for 70 in the second innings, stated that most of the help has come from the overcast conditions despite the variable bounce and seam movement. 

“I think it [the pitch] is certainly helping. There’s a little bit of variable bounce as you guys have seen, and the ball is seaming around. I feel like it is a different wicket, though, when the sun’s out. It feels like it’s pretty tough work [for bowlers] when the sun’s out and the ball gets a little bit soft, so hopefully there’s a bit of sun tomorrow,” Smith said in the post-match press conference, via ESPNcricinfo.

New Zealand finished day 2 on 36 for 3, needing another 218 runs to seal a victory.
