ENG vs NZ 2026: England’s selection dilemma deepens with question marks surrounding Jamie Smith’s availability

England could face more selection concerns following doubts over Jamie Smith’s availability for their second Test match against New Zealand at the Oval, commencing on Wednesday, June 17. The wicketkeeper-batter’s partner is expecting the birth of their second child imminently, which would see them leave the squad.

England secured a convincing 115-run victory over the Kiwis in the first Test match at Lord’s, but have been in more chaos than the visitors despite New Zealand seeing Kane Williamson retire from international cricket last week. This comes after both captain Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson broke the team curfew in the early hours of last Monday, with the pair suspended for the second Test. Joe Root will take over the captaincy of the side on an interim basis.

On top of Stokes and Atkinson’s kerfuffle, the Three Lions faced fresh selection concerns thanks to Ollie Robinson’s knee injury, which prompted the management to add Sussex’s uncapped fast bowler Henry Crocombe. 

Now, Smith has caused more selection headaches for England. Should the 25-year-old not be available for selection, the team could hand a Test debut to either James Rew or Jordan Cox. The latter recently scored 204 off 201 in the County Championship game against Leicestershire, before he was pulled out of the team mid-match by the ECB due to Smith’s doubts. 

England could be forced into making as many as five changes for the Oval Test against New Zealand. Apart from the aforementioned changes involving Stokes, Atkinson, Robinson, and maybe Smith, the hosts could bring in a fourth seam option in the side with the Oval wicket not suitable for spin. In that case, either Sonny Baker or Matt Fisher could come into the side in place of Shoaib Bashir, who did not bowl a single over in the first match. 

It is worth noting that Smith missed out on England’s 2024 tour to New Zealand due to the birth of his first child, wth Cox being in pole position to replace him as the side’s wicketkeeper. The Essex player, however, sustained a finger injury which prevented him from making his Test debut, with Ollie Pope instead taking the gloves. One-and-a-half years later, we have come full circle with Cox finally expected to represent his nation in the longest format of the game, thanks to the birth of Smith’s second child.
