The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed on Sunday that it has opened a formal inquiry after footage emerged of fast bowler Brydon Carse in handcuffs outside a Derby nightclub on Saturday night.

Carse had been released from the Test squad to turn out for Durham in the County Championship after he did not make the final eleven for the first Test against Pakistan. He contributed 26 runs with the bat and took 2 for 82 across the match as Durham defeated Derbyshire inside three days. The nightclub visit followed those celebrations with his county colleagues.

The clip, which spread across social media before the Telegraph officially published it, captures Carse with his arms restrained behind his back while in conversation with Durham teammate Matthew Potts. Former England captain Ben Stokes, who had contributed to Durham’s victory over Derbyshire earlier that day, is visible in the background.

“We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating. We will provide a further update when possible.” The ECB said in a statement, as quoted by Cricinfo.

What does the ECB inquiry mean for Carse’s availability at Lord’s?

Carse holds a central contract with the ECB, and although the incident took place outside an international window, the board retains jurisdiction over contracted players. He had been scheduled to travel to London on Monday and join the Test group for two days of preparation at Lord’s ahead of Thursday’s second Test against Pakistan. Whether he will now be available for selection remains unclear, with no decision announced as of Sunday.

Carse finished as England’s highest wicket-taker during last winter’s Ashes campaign but is yet to appear in an international fixture this summer. Wrist and elbow injuries ruled him out of the series against New Zealand. He subsequently joined the ODI squad for the India series as a late inclusion and then secured his place in the Test squad by demonstrating fitness during the Hundred with Sunrisers Leeds. The episode arrives at a difficult moment, coming so soon after England’s innings victory in the opening Test at Headingley.

How does this incident sit within England’s recent off-field conduct history?

England have faced repeated scrutiny over player behaviour away from the field across the past twelve months. Stokes and Gus Atkinson were both stood down while the ECB examined their conduct following celebrations after England’s first Test of the summer against New Zealand. That inquiry found no evidence of violent conduct but concluded that both players had breached specific contractual obligations, resulting in written warnings. Rob Key, England’s managing director, rejected suggestions the team had become a national embarrassment but directed that fresh guidance on alcohol use be circulated to the squad. Head coach Brendon McCullum set that guidance aside shortly afterwards, following a T20I series victory over India.

Stokes subsequently stepped away from international cricket and has since indicated that the ECB’s response to his night out influenced that choice. Speaking on a podcast this month, he acknowledged that cricket carries a broader cultural association with alcohol while rejecting the idea that England’s squad had a specific problem in that area. Joe Root, who returned to the Test captaincy after Stokes stood down, removed the team’s midnight curfew at the start of his second tenure, stating that he expected his players to conduct themselves as responsible adults. The Carse incident will prompt fresh questions about that approach during the build-up to Lord’s. The next confirmed step is an ECB update, which the board has said it will issue when possible. No charge, sanction or outcome has been announced.
