Draw not hurting like a defeat, says Shubman Gill after Sri Lanka deny India clean sweep

The second Test between India and Sri Lanka at the SSC Ground in Colombo ended in a draw on August 27, 2026, denying India a 2-0 series victory. Sri Lanka reached 429/9 in their second innings after being forced to follow on, mounting a determined fightback that prevented India from securing a clean sweep. The draw came after India had won the first Test by 165 runs at Galle, giving the hosts a 1-0 series victory in the two-match Test series.

India captain Shubman Gill reflected on the outcome and acknowledged the resilience shown by Sri Lanka’s batters across the final three days of the match. Gill stated that while the draw was disappointing given India’s hopes for victory, he recognised the credit due to the opposition for their performance under pressure.

“Draw not hurting like a defeat… situation wise, draw was credit to them, we hoped for a win so disappointing. Things always don’t go as per plan, so lot of learnings for me as well as a captain. I give 10/10 for the effort and intent of everyone.,” Gill was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Defending the follow-on decision

Gill’s decision to enforce the follow-on after India’s 213-run first-innings lead had placed Sri Lanka in a difficult position. India had declared at 503/9 in their first innings, while Sri Lanka managed 290, creating a substantial advantage. However, Sri Lanka’s batters, led by Sonal Dinusha‘s unbeaten 133, staged a strong recovery in the second innings.

Dinusha’s 133 came off 264 balls and included 8 fours and 2 sixes, forming the backbone of Sri Lanka’s second-innings total. He shared a crucial 112-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Keshara Nuwantha, who contributed 46 runs. This partnership proved decisive in extending Sri Lanka’s innings and securing the draw.

Gill defended his tactical decision to enforce the follow-on, explaining that India had fielded for over 250 overs across three days and weather conditions had influenced the strategy. The captain acknowledged that rain was a possibility and the team wanted to give themselves the best chance to push for victory.

“I don’t think follow-on backfired, we fielded for over 250 overs. We were anticipating (rain), wanted to take that chance. Had we not taken and had it rained, you would have asked why no follow on,” He added.

Pitch evolution and bowling challenges

The pitch conditions evolved significantly during the match, with the surface becoming slower and easier to bat on as the days progressed. Gill explained that India’s bowling attack faced increasing difficulty as the match wore on, with conventional dismissals becoming harder to achieve.

“Sri Lanka played really well. Days 3,4 and 5 – lbw and bowled was out of equation. We attacked initially but pitch became slower today. There was slow turn. Pitch became easier, we tried our best,” he further said.

Missed opportunities and team effort

Ravindra Jadeja took 3 wickets for 94 runs across 38.3 overs in Sri Lanka’s second innings, while Manav Suthar claimed 3 for 121 from 41 overs. The bowling performances reflected India’s sustained pressure despite the eventual draw outcome. Gill acknowledged that India had created opportunities on the fourth day that could have changed the result.

“On Day 4 we created chances, had wickets come result could’ve been different,” he concluded.

Despite the disappointment of not securing a clean sweep, Gill reflected positively on the team’s overall effort and intent throughout the series.
