Dinesh Chandimal leaves Chattogram Test for ‘family medical emergency’

Day 4 of the ongoing second Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka saw Lankan batter Dinesh Chandimal leaving Chattogram for Colombo, prompted by a “family medical emergency.”

A statement released by Sri Lanka Cricket conveyed that the 34-year-old will be heading home at once, with the board, his fellow teammates, and the coaching staff respecting Chandimal’s decision at this critical juncture, further putting in a plea to the general public to be mindful of his and his family’s privacy during this time of dire need.

“The player will return home immediately. Sri Lanka Cricket, his team-mates, and the coaching staff fully support Dinesh Chandimal at this moment of need and request that the public respect his and his family’s privacy,” a statement put out by the Sri Lanka Cricket read.

Chandimal scored 59 and 9 in the first and third innings of the match, respectively, with him being one among six batters for the visitors to bring up a half-century in the first innings. A substitute fielder will be brought in by Sri Lanka to take his spot during the fourth innings of the game.

Angelo Mathews notches 41st Test fifty during ongoing Test against Bangladesh

Coming in to bat at No. 4 with Sri Lanka’s second innings score being at 15/2, the seasoned campaigner Angelo Mathews saw not one, not two, but four wickets fall at the other end with the hosts in a slight spot of bother ending Day 3 at 102/6 with Mathews being unbeaten on 40 at the close of play.

Resuming on Day 4, Mathews went on to register his 41st half-century in Tests, with the same number of fifties in the longest format as stalwarts Hashim Amla and Steven Smith.

Sri Lanka set Bangladesh a lofty target of 511 after declaring on 157/7 on Day 4, with Mathews being the top-scorer for the Lankans in their second innings.

Sri Lanka lead Bangladesh by a margin of 1-0 in the two-match Test series with them winning the first Test by a resounding 328 runs, and will be looking to end on a high by aiming for a whitewash.
