South Africa’s experienced middle-order batter David Miller has been given the green light to play in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after being medically cleared following a recent injury concern. This is a major boost for the Proteas as they finalise their plans for the upcoming global tournament in India and Sri Lanka.
Miller, known for his destructive hitting, had been undergoing assessment and rehabilitation after suffering a groin injury during the SA20, subsequently missing the remainder of the competition as well as the Proteas T20I series against West Indies.
His clearance means he will be available for selection and fully fit ahead of the tournament, removing a potential headache for the South African management. Cricket South Africa confirmed that Miller has completed all necessary medical protocols and regained full fitness. The Proteas camp will now look to integrate him into final preparations as they build momentum for the World Cup.
The southpaw’s presence is significant for South Africa’s T20 plans. The left-handed batter’s ability to accelerate scoring in the middle overs and finish innings with authority has made him one of the most feared hitters in the format.
With the Proteas also preparing to balance their bowling attack and fielding intensity, having Miller available adds both experience and match-winning capability to the squad’s core. The 36-year-old is expected to bat at number 5, with finishing duties at his hand.
South Africa add Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton as replacements
The 2024 World Cup semi-finalists have been marred with injuries, as Tony de Zorzi and Donovan Ferreira, both included in the final squad, failed to recover on time for the multi-national tourney. The Proteas then announced the experienced duo of Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton as their injury replacements.
South Africa, led by Aiden Markram will open their campaign against Canada on February 9, at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
