Former Australian all-rounder David Hussey has stepped down from his role as the Head of Men’s Cricket after a nearly four-year tenure at the job.

Hussey took over the role in August 2022, with a predominant say in selection after stepping down as head coach of the Melbourne Stars. He represented Victoria 87 times and captained the side on 21 occasions. He lifted three Shield titles with the club as a player.

“Cricket Victoria would like to thank David Hussey for his outstanding contribution to the Victorian men’s program after almost four years as Head of Male Cricket. David’s impact on Victorian cricket extends far beyond his time in the role. Across more than two decades as a player, leader, coach and administrator, he has played a significant role in shaping the success and direction of cricket in Victoria,” the club stated, in an official statement.

Under his tenure, he oversaw three finals appearances, two Sheffield Shield finals, in 2022-23 and 2025-26, and a One-Cup Final, in 2024-25. Despite not winning any silverware, he oversaw the focus on the development of homegrown players, with Todd Murphy, Matt Short, Will Sutherland, Campbell Kellaway, Fergus O’Neill and the 19-year-old starlet Ollie Peake among those rising through the ranks in this span.

“David’s influence on the organisation and the broader Victorian cricket community is immeasurable. Through his passion for the game, commitment to excellence and investment in people, David has helped strengthen the foundations of our male high-performance program while leaving a lasting legacy across Victorian cricket,” Cricket Victoria’s General Manager of Cricket Performance, Graham Manou, said in the statement.

This decision comes after recent developments at the club, which saw head coach Chris Rogers’ contract extended further for two more years. The former Australian opening batter was appointed to the role in 2020.

Victoria was beaten by South Australia in the 2025-26 Shield final, their third finals appearance under Hussey’s tenure. Electing to bowl first, they bundled South Australia out for a mere 198 before managing just 261 runs in their first innings. A brilliant century from Alex Carey saw South Australia put up 258, leaving Victoria with just 196 runs to get. They were bowled out for 139, losing the summit clash by 56 runs.

Victoria has further confirmed that Hussey will continue working with the club, in a reduced role, as he helps establish an ‘exciting new global venture’.
