A fan put a direct question to Dale Steyn on X, asking whether the South African fast-bowling great would be open to taking up the Chennai Super Kings head coach role if the franchise approached him. Steyn’s response was short but drew immediate attention.

On his X account, Steyn replied to the fan’s question, “If CSK contacts you, will you consider that offer?” with two words: “Yes possibly.” The exchange gained traction because Steyn had already spoken publicly about CSK’s coaching setup earlier in 2026. On AB de Villiers’ YouTube channel, he called for the franchise to change their coaching staff after IPL 2026 and specifically named Stephen Fleming as the first person who should be replaced. Steyn also suggested at the time that Fleming could be moved to a Director of Cricket-type role rather than being let go entirely.

Stephen Fleming’s exit and CSK’s search for a new coach

Fleming stepped down as CSK head coach in July 2026, ending an association with the franchise that stretched from 2009 to 2026. During those 18 years, he guided CSK to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. CSK’s most recent IPL title under Fleming came in 2023. After leaving CSK, Fleming joined England as head coach of the Test team.

CSK’s recent results had placed the coaching setup under scrutiny. The franchise finished 10th in IPL 2025 and 8th in IPL 2026, missing the playoffs for three consecutive IPL seasons. Texas Super Kings also finished bottom of the MLC 2026 standings. Following Fleming’s departure, CSK ended their association with him at sister franchises Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and Texas Super Kings in the MLC as well.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed the franchise is seeking an overseas coach to fill the vacancy. The final decision is expected to be made in consultation with CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and MS Dhoni.

“We have spoken to the interested candidates, and we will sit down to finalise a name,” Viswanathan said in a recent interview.

Other reported candidates for the CSK role

Other reported candidates for the position include former CSK batting coach Michael Hussey, who has been with the franchise since 2018, and former South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel, recently appointed head coach of Joburg Super Kings in SA20. Morkel was part of CSK’s IPL title-winning sides in 2010 and 2011, and his appointment at Joburg Super Kings has been widely interpreted as a possible stepping stone toward the CSK head coach role.

Steyn has not held a confirmed head coaching position at any IPL franchise, and no formal approach from CSK to him has been reported as of August 14. His reply on X remains the only public indication of his interest in the role. CSK are expected to confirm their new head coach before the IPL 2027 auction cycle begins.
